Lead: Hound defenseman Matt Damelio (Rochester, N.Y./ Northwood (Prep)) was the only goal scorer for the Hounds as Salem State scored three goals early in the first period to secure a 5-1 win over Assumption on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Salem State opened up the scoring just 9:53 into the period when Brandon Platt deflected a pass from Brandon Wolfe and Eric Rogorzenski.
- About four minutes later the Vikings got back on the board when Derek Makimaa roofed a goal over David Zulauf's (Rochester, Mich./ Bridgton Academy (Prep)) right shoulder assisted from Daneil Campbell and Brody Heleno.
- Salem scored their third and final goal of the period with 3:15 left on the clock when Ryan Wilkerson and Emile Levesque found Mackenzie Cook open in the slot to tip in a hard pass.
- With 5:58 left in the second period Salem State forward John Needham scored on the odd man rush with assists from Campbell and Heleno.
- Just 4:20 into the third Damelio scored on a break away goal when teammate Matt Drake (Manchester, N.J./ Islanders Hockey Club USPHL Elite)) sent a pass as Damelio was skating across the Salem State blue line.
- The final goal of the game was scored just 30 seconds later by Platt, which was his second of the game assisted by Wolfe and Michael Chen.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Hounds were out shot by the Vikings 52-44 in the contest. Neither team committed a penalty in the contest.
- Salem State goaltender Jason Pucciarelli made 43 saves in the win, while Zulauf made 36 saves in the loss. Robbie Campbell (Raritan, N.J./ New England Stars(NA3EHL)) made 11 saves in his relief effort.
