THE BASICS:

-The Lead: In an exciting, back-and-forth game, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team fell in its season opener at Molloy on Saturday afternoon by a narrow score of 13-12. The Hounds were led by freshmen Travis Reid (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater Raynham) and Dan Farrell (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood) who each posted four goals on the day. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Farrell got the Hounds out to a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest.

-Malloy fired off five-straight goals to take a 5-1 lead in the first quarter before the Hounds began their comeback. Farrell scored again with 2:26 left on the clock to make it 5-2, followed by Reid who scored at the buzzer to bring Assumption within two, 5-3.

-Molloy answered with two straight to open the second frame, taking a 7-3 advantage, but Assumption scored four in a row to tie the contest, 7-7, headed into halftime. The first of the four goals was notched by senior Connor Munisteri (Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) with the man advantage and was followed by Reid, Farrell and sophomore Patrick Ward (Canton, Mass. / Kents Hill School). Ward's goal was also scored while the Hounds were up a man.

-Just one minute into the third quarter, Molloy broke the tie, 8-7, on a goal by Austin Valenti before Assumption's Dan Matisoff (Milton, Mass. / Milton) tied the game seven minutes later, 8-8.

-The Hounds claimed its first and only lead less than a minute later (6:08) when Reid found the back of the net again to make it 9-8.

-Molloy scored three more goals before the end of the third to send the squads into the final frame with the Lions up 11-9.

-The two squads battled throughout the first half of the fourth quarter but neither was able to score. The Hound offense peaked in the middle of the frame when sophomore Aidan Murphy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy) and Reid scored back-to-back goals 24 seconds apart (7:06, 6:40) to tie the game once again at 11-11.

-In the final three minutes, Molloy once again took the advantage, 12-11 with 3:11 left in regulation before Assumption's Farrell, assisted by Reid, tied it yet again with 2:47 left. 

-In a game that looked to be headed into extra minutes, Molloy's Jon Camposa scored the gamewinner with just 1:32 on the clock to clinch the 13-12 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Reid led Assumption with seven points on four goals and three assists followed by Farrell who posted four points on four goals.

-Senior Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn. / Avon) led the Hounds with six ground balls on the day followed by junior TJ McNicholas (Newton, Mass. / Newton North) who collected four. 

-Overall Assumption was outshot by Molloy 42-31.

-The Hounds claimed 14-of-26 face offs.

-Both teams tied with 26 ground balls apiece.

-In goal, freshman Colby Hamwey (West Yarmouth, Mass. / Wilbraham Monson Academy) collected 11 saves compared to eight for Molloy's Ryan Toomey.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:

-Last year, the Hounds hosted Molloy and suffered a 9-5 loss on March 17.
