-The Lead: After leading off with 10 first-quarter goals, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team claimed a 19-5 victory in its NE-10 opener against American International College on Friday. Freshmen Travis Reid (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater Raynham) and Dan Farrell (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood) accounted for eight of Assumption's goals, leading the Hounds with four apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hounds got out to a significant lead after the first quarter, scoring steadily throughout the period to make it 10-0 after 15 minutes of play.
-Hounds goals in the first quarter included two from Reid, two from Farrell, two from sophomore Patrick O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y. / St. Dominic), and one each from sophomore Aidan Murphy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy), senior Connor Munisteri (Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville), freshman Mike Leonard (Westwood, Mass. / Westwood) and junior TJ McNicholas (Newton, Mass. / Newton North).
-AIC outscored the Hounds 2-1 in the second quarter for a score of 11-2 at the half.
-AIC came out of halftime with two more goals, answered by two from Assumption (Farrell and Reid). The Yellow Jackets scored one more with 39 seconds on the clock in the third to make it 13-5.
-The Hounds fired off six more in the fourth quarter for the 19-5 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Reid led the Hounds with eight points on four goals and four assists.
-The Hounds outshot AIC 49-26 overall. Assumption also held a significant advantage in groundballs, collecting 57 compared to just 18 for AIC.
-Assumption was able to convert 2-of-6 man-up opportunities while the Yello Jackets failed to score on all four of their man-up chances.
-Freshman John Demott (Syracuse, N.Y. / Corcoran) earns the win for the Hounds. He allowed just two goals in 30 minutes in net while posting two saves. Freshman Colby Hamwey (West Yarmouth, Mass. / Wilbraham Monson Academy) accumulated 10 saves in his 30 minutes between the posts.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
-Nineteen goals nears the mark for most goals scored by the Hounds in a single game in program history. The top spot is 25 and tied for sixth is 20 goals in a game against American International on April 4, 2008.
-Four assists in a game ties for third all time in single-game assists for an individual. With his eight points, Reid ties for ninth all time in points per game in a season.
-Reid is currently ranked fifth in the NE-10 with 11 goals on the season and fourth in points with 19. He is also ranked fourth with eight assists .
-Hamwey is currently fifth in the conference with 21 saves.
