-The Lead: Led by a three-goal performance by freshman Dan Farrell (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood), the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-7 decision to Saint Anselm at the Assumption Multi-Sport Stadium on Alumni Day. At halftime of the contest, the Hounds honored several founding members of the Assumption men's lacrosse program in attendance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hounds got out to an early lead when sophomore Patrick O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y. / St. Dominic) netted the first goal of the game just 2:22 into the first quarter.
-Saint Anselm responded just over two minutes later to tie the score 1-1 before Farrell notched his first goal of the game, assisted by senior Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn. / Avon) just 10 seconds later, 2-1 Hounds.
-The Hawks tied the game exactly four minutes later, 2-2, before taking the lead with 3:54 left on the clock in the first period.
-Saint Anselm took a substantial lead in the second period, scoring four unanswered goals to make it 7-2 at the half.
-Farrell scored again to open the second half, finding the back of the net just 34 seconds into the frame, assisted by sophomore Dan Matisoff (Milton, Mass. / Milton), 7-3.
-Saint Anselm registered back-to-back goals, including a man-up goal by Mark Vitello, to take a 9-3 lead before Assumption began a roaring comeback attempt.
-Assumption closed the third quarter with three straight goals within six minutes. Sophomore Patrick Ward (Canton, Mass. / Kents Hill School), Farrell and freshman Travis Reid (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater Raynham) put the Hounds back in the game, 9-6. Reid and O'Brien also had assists during the 3-0 run.
-With the game in reach in the fourth, Saint Anselm scored 3:01 into the period to extend its lead to 10-6.
-The Hounds furiously attempted a comeback in the fourth but fell short, as Reid was the only Hound to register a goal in the period, assisted by O'Brien, for the 10-7 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Farrell was the Hounds' leading scorer on the day with three goals on 11 shots, eight on goal.
-Reid also registered three points on the day on two goals and one assist along with O'Brien who posted one goal and two assists.
-Guarino dominated the faceoff circle, claiming 18-of-21 faceoffs on the day while also leading the Hounds with eight ground balls.
-Senior Cameron Murphy (Walpole, Mass. / Xaverian) forced three turnovers on the day.
-Assumption outshot Saint Anselm 36-33 overall, but the Hawks tallied just 16 turnovers to the Hounds' 24.
-Assumption was extremely effective in clears as they were successful on 11-of-12 attempts. Saint Anselm was just 15-of-21.
-Freshman John Demott (Syracuse, N.Y. / Corcoran) started in net for the Hounds, collecting five saves on 12 shots while allowing seven goals in 30 minutes. Demott, who falls to 1-5 on the season with the loss, was replaced by freshman Colby Hamwey (West Yarmouth, Mass. / Wilbraham Monson Academy) at the half. Hamwey also posted five saves on eight shots while allowing just three goals in his 30 minutes.
-Lucas DeAngelo earns the win for the Hawks and improves to 7-3 on the season. He turned aside 13 shots in the victory.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
-During halftime of the game, Assumption honored eight members of the 1974 and 1975 founding Assumption men's lacrosse teams. The members included Charlie Powers '75, David Jean '75, Don Morrison '77, Keith Krauss '75, Drew Kronk '75, Tom Leddy '76, Rob Blanchflower '77, Jack Foley '77, as well as former captain Joe Bobbin '75, who passed away last year.
-Prior to Saturday's game, the Hounds were ranked in the top-20 in four national categories. The Hounds were 10th in the country in man-up offense, 13th in man-down defense, 16th in face-off winning percentage and 18th in saves per game.
-Individually, Guarino was ranked in the top 20 in two categories including 12th in ground balls per game (6.5) and 19th in face-off winning percentage (0.586). Additionally, Ward was ranked 17th in the country in individual man-up goals (6).
UP NEXT:
-The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, April 20, when they host Merrimack in their Blue Out game at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
