The Lead: After giving up a game-tying goal in the 88th minute, Assumption regrouped and junior Amanda Arnold (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) came through with a game-winner just 3:23 into the extra session to lift the team to a 3-2 win in its Norteast-10 Conference opener at Southern Connecticut State on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on a Kallie Villemaire's (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) first goal of the season, off a feed from Arnold.
- SCSU evened the score with just under five minutes left in the first half, but Arnold put Assumption back in front 2-1 at 51:15 on a breakaway.
- The Owls threatened in the final minutes, and eventually came up with a game-tying goal in the 88th minute as Christine Allard headed in a free kick to knot the score 2-2.
- Arnold got a breakaway attempt just three minutes into overtime and came through with the goal to provide the overtime win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Assumption was outshot by the Owls 15-13 in the contest, but had nine shots on goal, compared to just five for SCSU. The visitors also held the Owls without a corner kick in the contest while they had one.
- Arnold scored twice and dished off an assist for a season-high five points. She has now scored in each of her team's three games this season.
- Emily Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / East Haven) was solid in goal for the Hounds, making three saves in 93:23 while giving up a pair of goals to earn the victory. Gabrielle Arruda took the loss in net for the Owls, making six saves while allowing three goals.
