- The Lead: The Assumption women's soccer team fell 4-1 to Adelphi during senior night, when the Hounds honored senior captains Amanda Arnold (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) and Carolyn Cook (Hamilton, Mass. / Hamilton-Wenham Regional) in their last collegiate home match.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Adelphi grabbed an early 1-0 lead as Taylor Sipos took advantage of a loose ball that got by sophomore keeper Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) near the top of the box, firing a low shot through a maze of Hound defenders and into the net.
- The Panthers doubled their lead in the 31st minute when Adelphi's leading goal scorer Jeanine Nunez headed in a set piece from Taylor Sipos, who took the spot kick outside of the box near the endline.
- Assumption wasted no time cutting the lead in half, as they responded with a goal of their own less than a minute later. Freshman Brooke Shatney (Weare, N.H. / John Stark Regional) registered her first collegiate goal when sophomore Alexis Stowell (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) sent a cross into the box, which Shatney headed into the corner of the net.
- In the second half, Nunez tallied her second goal of the game when she dribbled the ball down the left sideline and cut it in to her right foot, bending it past Nason and into the far corner. Sipos then followed suit with her second goal of the match, as she hit a bullet from 20 yards out that hit off of the inside near post and in.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- The Hounds wrap up their regular season and will now head to #3 Saint Rose for a NE10 First Round matchup as the #6 seed.
- Adelphi outshot Assumption 13-8 on the contest, while both teams recorded two corner kicks a piece.
QUOTE FROM THE COACH:
"That's not how we wanted to send off our seniors but I thought we played hard. We're now going to turn all of our attention to Saint Rose where we will hopefully extend our season and make a run in the NE10 Tournament."
