- The Lead: Junior Kallie Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) scored a hat trick and broke the Assumption single season scoring record as the Assumption women's soccer team upset Saint Rose on the road in the opening round of the NE10 Conference tournament tonight.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Villemaire was a woman on a mission in the opening round of the NE10 tournament, as the sixth seeded Hounds traveled to the third seeded Golden Knights of Saint Rose tonight. Villemaire put the Hounds up 1-0 in the ninth minute of action when she intercepted a pass from the defense and dribbled down the right flank, firing a shot into the far corner of the net.
- Villemaire then doubled the Assumption lead just under three minutes later when she took a pass from junior Jessica FitzGerald (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge) that split the defense, before curling a shot around the keeper. The Plattsburgh, New York native completed her hat trick in the 28th minute as she dribbled down the left side of the box and perfectly placed a low shot out of the reach of the goalkeeper. With that goal, Villemaire broke the single season scoring record for Assumption, giving her 20 goals on the season.
- Sophomore keeper Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) was outstanding in net for Assumption, as she made six saves, while also saving a crucial penalty shot in the 14th minute of the first half. Sophomore's Emily MacDonald (Ludlow, Mass. / The Williston Northampton School), Sammy Ferrera (Natick, Mass. / Natick), Alexis Stowell (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) and junior Kiana Rocco (Guilford, Conn. / Sacred Heart Academy) formed the defense that helped shutout Saint Rose as the Hounds move on to the next round of the NE10 Tournament.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption now moves on in the NE10 Tournament and will travel to Southern New Hampshire for a semifinal showdown on Friday.
