The Lead: Assumption jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes and extended its lead to 12-2 after three quarters on the way to an 18-3 victory over AIC in NE10 action on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over American International in the first quarter as freshmen Brett Jennings (Montgomery, N.Y. / Valley Central High School), Trevor Wilcox (Somers, Mass. / East Catholic High School) and Spencer Marocchini (Somers, Mass. / Wilbraham and Monson Academy) tallied goals in the first seven minutes of action.
- The Yellow Jackets responded with a goal of their own with 2:34 left in the first quarter to cut the Hound lead to 3-1. Sophomore's Dan Farrell (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood) and Travis Reid (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater Raynham) finished the opening stanza with a flourish, as they both scored goals with under a minute to play.
- The Hounds outscored the Yellow Jackets 3-1 in the second quarter to up their lead to 8-2, as Farrell completed his hat trick with a pair of goals.
- Assumption continued to pull away in the third quarter, using four goals from four different players to blow the game open at 12-2. Freshman Jason Hughes (Watertown, Mass. / Watertown High School) opened the scoring in the fourth at the 13:38 mark, before Reid and Wilcox added a pair of goals in quick succession. After Marocchini and sophomore Mike Leonard (Westwood, Mass. / Westwood) found the back of the net to make the lead 17-2, sophomore Tommy Galvin (Canton, Mass. / Canton) recorded his first collegiate goal to end the scoring at 18-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBES:
- Assumption outshot AIC 53-20 in the contest and won 19 of 24 face-offs on the day. The Hounds also picked up 39 ground balls and caused nine turnovers.
- Reid was the offensive catalyst, with a team-high seven points on three goals and four assists. Farrell scored a team-high four while Marocchini recorded five points (2g, 3a) and Hughes had four points (2g, 2a).
- Sophomore Connor Reid (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater Raynham) wont 14 of 19 face-offs with eight ground balls while Colin Buck (Bow, N.H. / Bow High School) won all five of his face-offs.
- Sophomore Colby Hamwey (West Yarmouth, Mass. / Wilbraham Monson Academy) was solid in net, making five saves with just two goals allowed to earn the win. Chris Schultz (Bayville, N.Y. / Locust Valley High School) came on in relief and made three saves in 8:35 while giving up a goal. Matt Sayegh took the loss but did make 25 saves with 18 goals allowed.
