The Lead: Assumption trailed just 4-1 at the half to No. 10 Adelphi, but the Panthers outscored the Hounds 6-1 in the third quarter to pull away for a 14-4 victory at home Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Panthers got on the board first at 12:27 and added two back-to-back goals just seven seconds apart to make the score 3-0. With 2:41 left in the first quarter, the Hounds got on the board as junior midfielder Aidan Murphy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./ Christian Brothers Academy) scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 3-1.
- The Assumption defense allowed just one goal in the second, but the offense only got off three shots and were held scoreless. Adelphi's offense starting rolling in the third, outscoring the Hounds 6-1. Brett Jennings (Montgomery, N.Y. / Valley Central High School) provided the only Assumption goal as the Hounds trailed 10-2.
- Trevor Kennedy (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) trimmed the deficit to 11-3 54 seconds into the fourth, but the Panthers answered with two goals to stretch their lead to 13-3. Each team scored once in the final five minutes as Assumption fell by ten.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption was outshot just 37-30 in the contest but did lose 14 of 21 face-offs while Adelphi picked up more ground balls as well (27-23).
- No Hound scored more than one goal, though Jennings did add seven ground balls. Anthony Horvath (Holbrook, Mass. / Sachem East) led the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- Colby Hamwey (West Yarmouth, Mass. / Wilbraham Monson Academy) was saddled with the loss as he made eight saves while allowing 14 goals in 56:50. Brendan Mcdougal, meanwhile earned the win for Adephi as he played the first 30 minutes and stopped three shots.
