The Lead: Assumption scored three times in the opening five minutes and led 8-2 at the half on the way to a crucial 12-7 NE10 victory over Franklin Pierce on Wednesday afternoon to improve to 3-3 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption got on the board first with a goal from Spencer Marocchini (Somers, Mass. / Wilbraham and Monson Academy) at 12:41, which was assisted by Dan Farrell (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood). Marocchini extended the lead to 2-0 one minute later and Trevor Wilcox (Somers, Mass. / East Catholic High School) stretched it to 3-0 off an assist from Aidan Murphy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy) at 10:32.
- Marocchini secured the hat trick with his third goal of the contest, which was assisted by goal Travis Reid (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater Raynham), at 8:44. Franklin Pierce did answer back with two goals less than one minute apart, but Brett Jennings (Montgomery, N.Y. / Valley Central High School) scored with 15 seconds left on the clock for a 5-2 lead.
- Reid opened in the second quarter with a goal at 8:26, while Jennings had the assist. Reid added another goal in the period and Jennings scored twice, including with 22 seconds left in the period to go into the half up 9-2.
- Franklin Pierce score the only three goals of the third to close the gap to 9-5 going into the final period. Travis Reid ended the run just 1:04 into the period. The Ravens countered with two scores to trim the deficit to 10-7 with 6:24 left. Farrell answered a minute later and Jennings capped off the scoring with 2:30 left for a 12-7 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption held a 34-32 shot advantage in the contest and Connor Reid won 15 of 23 face-offs as the Hounds picked up six more ground balls in the game (28-22). Reid also picked up five ground balls in the win.
- T. Reid led the offense once again, with three goals, three assists and four ground balls. Jennings added four goals and two assists for six points as well while Marocchini registered his first career hat trick. Farrell dished off three assists to go with a goal.
- Colby Hamwey (West Yarmouth, Mass. / Wilbraham Monson Academy) was dominant in net as he made 15 saves while allowing just seven goals for his fourth win of the year. Connor Wacksman took the loss as he gave up 12 goals while stopping 12 shots.
