THE BASICS:

-Score: Assumption 2, American International 1

-Records: Assumption (7-6-0, 6-4-0 NE10), American International (6-8-0, 4-6-0 NE10)

-Location: Springfield, Mass. (Abdow Field)

-The Lead: A goal by Kallie Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) with one minute and 54 second left in the game, followed by a pair of diving saves by Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) within the final minute of play led the Assumption Greyhounds past the American International Yellow Jackets 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-American International's Federica Flew scored just 18 seconds after Villemaire put the Hounds up by two at the 88:06 mark. The Yellow Jackets then tried tying the game within the final minute, but Nason made two diving saves to preserve the lead and the win for the Hounds.

-Within the final two minutes of play, Diana Bruggeman (Natick, Mass. / Natick) sent a shot toward the goal, only to have it deflected to Villemaire. Villemaire gathered in the deflected ball and placed it in the wide-open, bottom left corner of the net to put the Hounds up 2-1.

-Alexis Stowell (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) sent the Hounds into halftime with a 1-0 lead by sending a second-chance shot into the back of the goal. Stowell gained the ball after a teammate's shot went off the post.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-American International held a 28-5 shot advantage, including a 16-1 advantage in the second-half. They also edged the Hounds, 4-1, in corner kicks. Villemaire led the team with three shots.

-Villemaire now has 10 goals on the year and three in her last four games. She is one goal away from tying the school record in career goals for one player.

-Stowell has now scored two goals on the season. Both goals ended up as the game-winning kick.

-Nason made 13 saves for the Hounds and improved to 6-6-0 on the year. She leads the NE10 conference with 82 saves. Mikayla Demanche made one save for the Yellow Jackets but fell to 6-8-0 on the year.

Quote from the Coach:

"American International is an extremely talented team and our goal keeper kept us in this game. She was a hero today," said Assumption head coach Grace Barnard. "I'm proud of the way this team played. They played with a bunch of heart and determination. This was a big win for us."
