-The Lead: The Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference game to the Catawba Indians on Wednesday evening. The two teams headed into halftime tied 6-6, and the hosts outscored the Hounds 6-3 over the final two quarters to claim the final 12-9 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The two teams traded goals through the first quarter, with Assumption taking a 4-3 lead on a goal by junior Anthony D'Angelo (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) before the buzzer.
-Keegan Maxwell gave Catawba their first lead of the game with a goal at the 11:33 in the second quarter, 5-4. The Hounds used back-to-back goals by senior Trevor Wilcox (Somers, Conn. / East Catholic) and junior Nicholas Shanley (Milford, Conn. / Notre Dame of West Haven) to take a 6-5 lead with just under six to go in the second. Christian Norrie found the back of the net at the 2:11 mark to tie the game at 6-6 heading into the halftime break.
-Catawba outscored Assumption 4-2 in the third quarter, with two goals by Maxwell, to take a 10-8 lead. Senior Brett Jennings (Montgomery, N.Y. / Valley Central) scored Assumption's final goal of the game as the Indians clinched the final 12-9 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Senior Spencer Marocchini (Somers, Conn. / Wilbraham & Monson) had two goals with two assists for the Greyhounds. D'Angelo had two goals with an assist. Senior Tim Tierney (Framingham, Mass. / Framingham) caused four turnovers and sophomore Mike Pasquaretta (Greenlawn, N.Y. / Harborfields) posted six saves.
-Norrie led Catawba with five goals in the victory. Maxwell finished with three goals and one assist. Kevin Geiger made 13 saves and improved to 3-3 on the season.
-The Indians edged the Hounds in shots 37-36. Assumption was 19-for-21 on clear attempts while Catawba went 20-for-24. The hosts won 15-of-24 face-offs.
