-The Lead: The No. 4 seed Assumption University Women's soccer team saw their season come to an end with a loss on penalty kicks in the NE10 semifinal game vs No. 8 seed Southern Connecticut. The game was another back and forth battle for the Hounds creating multiple chances but couldn't convert. Yet again the Assumption defense and goalkeeping stood strong in what would be their 10th overtime game of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption created pressure throughout the whole first half taking 13 shots.
- Julia Walsh (San Diego, Calif.) made a big save with three minutes left in the first overtime when she came off her line and was able to disrupt the Owls attack.
-With 30 seconds left in the second overtime, Annie Irwin (Norwood, Mass. / Montrose School) nearly had the winner for the Hounds when her shot hit the crossbar and took a funny bounce but the Owls were then able to clear the ball from danger.
-Three Owls were able to convert their penalty kicks while Haleigh Ward (North Kingstown, R.I.) was the only Hound to convert her penalty.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Assumption took 20 shots on the night with five of them on target while the Owls took eight with four of them on target.
-Walsh made four saves on the night while Allie Smith made 5.
-The Hounds won two corners on the evening while Southern took none.
