-The Lead: The No. 4 seed Assumption University Women's soccer team faced off with No 5 Franklin Pierce University in the Northeast 10 Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. The game was a back and forth defensive battle with both teams creating high pressure and various chances to take the lead. The goalies and defense stayed strong throughout 110 minutes and this game would be decided by a penalty kick shootout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first half between both teams was a scoreless battle, with both defenses remaining active and both goalies making big saves to keep it a 0-0 tie heading into halftime.
- Assumption had a great chance in the first to go ahead two minutes into the game but Carly Sevigny's (Swansea,Mass / Bishop Stang) shot hit the crossbar.
-Julia Walsh (San Diego, Calif.) made a big save with the clock winding down in the first half, fully extending to her right and making a finger tip save to keep the game tied at 0-0.
-Walsh made another big save with 18 minutes to go in regulation when she fully stretched for a high shot and denied the Ravens.
-The Hounds put up two shots throughout the two overtimes while the defense allowed none and the game would be decided in a penalty kick shootout.
- The Ravens converted their first two PKs while freshmen Julia Sferlazza (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) and Maya Demello (Bristol, R.I.) scored theirs to keep things even.
-Julia Walsh stopped Tess McKenzies PK getting a hand on it and deflecting the ball of the post.
-Ashley Wenzel (Kensington, Conn.) converted the 3rd PK for the Hounds.
-Walsh saved Hailey Goodmans chance diving to her right and then Kerguillecs diving to her left to give the Hounds the win to advance to the NE10 Semifinals.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Assumption took 13 shots on the night with five of them on target while the Ravens took eight with seven of them on target.
-Walsh made seven saves on the night including three in the shootout while Calidonio made five saves throughout the game and one in the shootout.
-Both teams took four corner kicks on the night.
