-The Lead: The Assumption University men's lacrosse team fell to the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in their season opener on Wednesday afternoon. The Penmen used a strong first period, outscoring the Greyhounds 6-0, to lift them to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After a scoreless opening seven minutes, the Penmen got on the scoreboard when junior Chris Valentine found graduate student David Wiedenfield in front of the net for the 1-0 lead.
-SNHU put up three goals in under two minutes to pull ahead 4-0 and finished the first quarter with goals by Valentine and senior Cole Jacobson for the 6-0 lead.
-Assumption wasted no time at the start of the second period with an unassisted goal by junior Sean Laughlin (East Sandwich, Mass. / Sandwich) just five seconds in (6-1). The Penmen edged the Hounds in scoring 3-2 to take a seven-point lead heading into the halftime break.
-Assumption was the first to score again in the third quarter and outscored the Penmen 4-3.
-With four minutes off the clock, senior Nicholas Shanley (Milford, Conn. / Notre Dame of West Haven) dished the ball to his classmate Anthony D'Angelo (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) who found the back of the net in a man-up opportunity to bring the Hounds within six (9-3).
-The Hounds closed the gap to five with a tally by sophomore Nolan Sheehan (Potomac, Md. / The Heights), assisted by first year Brady McNulty (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland) at the 5:48 mark. SNHU added back-to-back goals by first year Jack Terrones and senior Stephen Dubois to climb back ahead by seven (11-4). Assumption responded with two goals of their own, by first year Sam Maciel (Narrsgansett, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) and Shanley to pull within five with 1:03 on the clock (11-6).
-Jacobson put one more in net for SNHU before the end of the third to give the Penmen a six-point lead heading into the final stanza.
-Assumption outscored SNHU 3-1 in the final 15 minutes of play. Sheehan, Shanley and Maciel all tallied their second goals of the game for Assumption in a bid at a fourth-quarter comeback. SNHU defense held strong to secure the final 13-9 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-First year Ronan DePaul earned the win in net for the Penmen. He made an impressive 22 saves in his first outing and improves to 1-0 on the season.
-First year Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Saint John the Baptist DHS) made 15 stops in goal for Assumption as he falls to 0-1 on the season.
-Shanley led the Assumption offense with two goals and one assist on the day. First year Cooper Joyal (Longmeadow, Mass. / Longmeadow) led the Hounds with six ground balls.
-Terrones and Valentine each put up four goals in the victory for SNHU. Valentine added three assists to lead the Penmen on attack.
-Sophomore Gennaro Marra picked up a game high nine ground balls for the visitors.
-Assumption outshot SNHU 50-44 and SNHU won 13-of-25 faceoffs.
