-The Lead: The Assumption University men's lacrosse team fell to the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University in a Northeast-10 Conference battle on Wednesday afternoon. After trailing by four at the half, the Hounds rallied for six goals in the third quarter to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the final 15-minutes. The Ravens edged Assumption in scoring, 3-2 in the final quarter to clinch the 10-9 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Franklin Pierce scored the only goal of the first 15-minute quarter with an unassisted tally by sophomore Caleb Ikkela at the 4:40 mark. The Ravens added another tally just over five minutes into the second quarter when his classmate, Sean Daly found the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
-Assumption got on the board at the 7:45 mark in the second quarter, taking advantage of a man-up situation. First year Jackson Bulger (West Simsbury, Conn. / Simsbury) dished the ball to senior Nicholas Shanley (Milford, Conn. / Notre Dame of West Haven) on the left post for the goal (2-1).
-Franklin Pierce put up three unanswered goals with under four minutes to go in the quarter to take a 5-1 lead heading into the halftime break. Daly added his second goal of the game with 3:40 on the clock for the 3-1 advantage. Senior Josh Dorr put away two goals, one man-up goal, in the final three minutes for the 5-1 lead at half.
-Assumption outscored the Ravens 6-2 in the third period. Sophomore Nolan Sheehan (Potomac, Md. / The Heights) added three goals and first year Ryan Healey (Westwood, Mass. / Bridgton Academy) tallied two in the quarter to lead the Hounds to the two-point edge with 10:07 on the clock. The Ravens tied the game at seven with another goal from Dorr and an unassisted goal by sophomore Owen McCormack before the buzzer. The two teams headed into the final 15 minutes tied, 7-7.
-Assumption pulled ahead by two just over three minutes into the fourth stanza. Nicholas Shanley set up behind the net and dished it off to Bulger who found room behind Franklin Pierce goalkeeper, James Heirmiller, for the 8-7 lead. Nicholas Shanley netted his second goal of the game after senior Tyler Grant (Londonderry, N.H. / Brewster Academy) won the faceoff for the Hounds and found him at the left post for the 9-8 edge with 11:56 to go.
-Franklin Pierce went on a 3-0 run to close the game and take the 10-9 final over Assumption. Daly spun his way through Assumption defenders and snuck in a low shot to bring the Ravens within one with 6:21 on the clock. Just 10 seconds later, sophomore Nathaniel Girardin netted an unassisted goal from the left side to tie the game at nine. Sophomore Eric Bua Jr. scored the game-winner for Franklin Pierce at the 2:28 mark, 10-9.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Sheehan led Assumption on offense with three goals in the setback. Nicholas Shanley added two goals and two assists for the Hounds and Healey netted two for the hosts.
-Door and Daly netted three goals each to lead Franklin Pierce to victory.
-First year Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Saint John the Baptist DHS) made 10 saves in net for Assumption and falls to 0-4 on the season.
-Heitmiller improves to 3-4 in goal for Franklin Pierce. He made 12 saves in the victory.
-The Ravens edged Assumption in total shots, 39-34. The Hounds put up 21 shots on goals while Franklin Pierce tallied 20.
-The Ravens won 12-of-22 face-offs and won 26 ground balls to Assumption's 19.
