-The Lead: The Assumption University men's lacrosse team battled their way to a Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon. The Hounds held a three-point advantage at half time and both teams put up nine points over the final two quarters as Assumption took the final 16-13 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Purple Knights got on the scoreboard first with a goal by sophomore Alex Chirgwin just over three minutes into play. The Hounds tied it up at the 8:11 mark when first year Ryan Bogar (Medfield, Mass. / Thayer Academy) found sophomore Nolan Sheehan (Potomac, Md. / The Heights) open for the score. Senior Tyler Grant (Londonderry, N.H. / Brewster Academy) won the faceoff for Assumption and just one minute later the visitors took the lead on an unassisted tally by first year Ryan Healey (Westwood, Mass. / Bridgton Academy) (2-1). The Hounds extended their lead to two at the 4:39 mark when senior Nicholas Shanley (Milford, Conn. / Notre Dame of West Haven) dished the ball to Sheehan who found room at the back of the net for the 3-1 advantage. With just six seconds on the clock Saint Michael's closed the gap back to one with a shot to the top right corner by sophomore Max Katavolos (3-2).
-Assumption pulled back ahead by two with a goal by senior Anthony D'Angelo (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) just two minutes into the second quarter (4-2). First year Jackson Bulger (West Simsbury, Conn. / Simsbury) put the Hounds up by three with a goal at the 10:47 mark, but the Purple Knights responded less than a minute later when they won the faceoff and first year Peter Canning found his classmate Dylan Morgan open on the post for his eighth goal of the season (5-3). Assumption came out of a timeout with back-to-back goals by Sheehan and D'Angelo to take a 7-3 lead with 4:40 on the clock. Saint Michael's closed out the quarter with a goal by first year Kevin Riggs as the hosts trailed by three heading into the halftime break (7-4).
-The Purple Knights came within two at the start of the third quarter as Katavolos scored in a man-up situation on an assist by Canning (7-5). The Hounds responded with a tally by first year Sam Maciel (Narragansett, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) at the 10:38 mark. Saint Michael's was able to put in three unanswered goals over five minutes to come within one at the 3:41 mark, 10-9. Maciel scored the final goal of the quarter to put Assumption up by two heading into the final 15 minutes, 11-9.
-Assumption started the fourth quarter in a man-up opportunity and capitalized with a goal by Bogar at the 13:10 mark to take a 12-9 lead. Katavalos put up two goals for Saint Michael's and Bogar added another goal for the Hounds as the visitors led by two with 10:34 to go, 13-11. The Hounds outscored the Purple Knights, 3-2 over the final nine minutes to capture the 16-13 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Bogar led the Hounds on offense with four goals and one assist while D'Angelo also added four goals in the victory. First year, Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Saint John the Baptist DHS) made 13 clutch saves in net for Assumption and improves to 1-4 on the season.
-Katavolos led Saint Michael's with an impressive six goals in the setback. Senior Dominic Joy made nine saves in net for the Purple Knights and falls to 3-5 on the season.
-Saint Michael's edged Assumption in total shots, 47-45. Both teams finished the day with 26 shots on goal.
-The Hounds picked up 37 groundballs to Saint Michael's 33.
-The Purple Knights won 21 of 32 faceoffs.
-Both teams turned the ball over 15 times.
