-The Lead: The Assumption University men's lacrosse team fell to the Setters of Pace University on a stormy Wednesday evening in Worcester, Mass. After a lightening delay at the end of the second quarter, the two teams headed into the halftime break tied, 5-5. The Setters outscored the Hounds 8-3 over the final 30 minutes to claim the 13-8 final victory. Prior to the game the Hounds recognized their five graduating seniors for senior day: Adam Becker (Waltham, Mass. / Waltham), Anthony D'Angelo (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton), Anthony Rausa (Littleton, Mass. / Littleton), Aidan Tefft (Franklin, Mass. / Xaverian Brothers) and Will Wiegand (Jefferson, Mass. / Wachusett Regional).
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hounds outscored Pace 4-1 to take an early lead after the first 15 minutes of play. Following a scoreless opening six minutes, Assumption got on the board with a goal by first year Ryan Healey (Westwood, Mass. / Bridgton Academy). The Setters responded just seconds later with a goal by junior Jake Veres that was assisted by graduate student Blake Balcaen, to tie the game, 1-1.
- The Hounds went on a 3-0 run to close out the first quarter. First year Sam Maciel (Narragansett, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) found D'Angelo who started the rally with a goal at the 5:39 mark (2-1). Just a minute later, a shot by sophomore Nolan Sheehan (Potomac, Md. / The Heights) was blocked by Pace goalkeeper, junior Louis Ragusa, Nicholas Shanley picked up a rebound and dished it to Becker who found the back of the net for the 3-1 lead with 4:34 on the clock. Assumption put up their fourth and final goal of the quarter just over 10 seconds later when Nicholas Shanley netted his fifth goal of the season (4-1).
-Pace came alive in the second quarter, outscoring the Hounds 4-1. Assumption started the quarter off with a goal by D'Angelo just 30 seconds into play, to pull ahead 5-1. Pace went on a 4-0 run to the 2:08 mark to tie the game 5-5. With 29 seconds on the clock the game was called for a lightening delay and the teams headed indoors just before the half.
-The Hounds opened the third quarter with a goal by D'Angelo just a minute and a half into play to take a 6-5 lead. Pace outscored Assumption 6-2 over the remainder of the quarter to take an 11-8 advantage into the final 15 minutes. Graduate student Alan Singleton put up back-to-back goals for the Setters at the 10:39 mark and the 8:49 mark. Pace took advantage of a man-up opportunity with goals by Veres and junior Tim Cairo at the 6:09 and 5:46 mark to take a 9-6 lead. The Hounds used goals by first year Ryan Bogar (Medfield, Mass. / Thayer Academy) and Nicholas Shanley to pull within one with three and a half to go in the third (9-8). The Setters responded with two more goals before the buzzer, 11-8.
-Pace extended their lead to four, when sophomore Anthony Caputo sent a shot wide, but regained possession and netted his 18th goal of the season, 12-8. Sophomore Aidan Egazarian found Veres open in front of the net for his third goal of the game and the 13-8 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-D'Angelo led the Hounds on offense with three goals. Nicholas Shanley added two goals and an assist in the setback. First year Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Saint John the Baptist DHS) made 13 saves in net for Assumption and falls to 1-5 on the season.
-Veres and Singleton led the Setters on offense, putting up three goals and one assist each. Ragusa improves to 4-6 in net for Pace as he made 10 saves in the victory.
-Pace picked up 24 ground balls while Assumption scooped up 20 on the day.
-The Setters won 15-of-25 faceoffs.
-The visitors outshot Assumption 43-29 (26-18 shots on goal)
