-The Lead: The Assumption University men's lacrosse team fell to the Panthers of Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action on the road on Saturday. The Hounds trailed by just two at the half before the Panthers outscored them 9-2 over the final 30 minutes to claim the 15-6 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Adelphi got things going at the 12:18 mark in the first quarter when graduate student John Arcidiacono found his classmate Nicolas Racalbuto open for his 19th goal of the season and the 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, the hosts pulled ahead 2-0 with a goal by junior Joseph Duchnowski.
-Assumption cut their lead in half with a goal by first year Brady McNulty (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland) with 46 seconds to go in the first quarter (2-1).
-The Panthers edged the Hounds 4-3 in scoring in the second quarter to take a 6-4 advantage into the halftime break. Arcidiacono netted his 10th goal of the season and Duchnowski put the Panthers ahead 4-1 with a man-up goal at the 12:21 mark.
-First year Sam Maciel (Narragansett, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) put in Assumption's second goal of the game at the 9:56 mark (4-2). Adelphi used back-to-back goals at the 7:56 and 7:10 mark to pull ahead by four (6-2). The Hounds closed the quarter with goals from McNulty and Maciel to pull within two at the half (6-4).
-The Panthers used seven goals in the third quarter to extend their lead to nine (13-4). Junior Quentin O'Reilly netted two goals in the rally for Adelphi. The hosts continued their run with the opening goal of the fourth quarter, scored by Jack Roberts at the 11:51 mark.
-Assumption added two goals back, one from sophomore Nolan Sheehan (Potomac, Md. / The Heights) and one from senior Anthony D'Angelo (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) to pull within eight with 7:24 to go (14-6). Adelphi used one more goal, by freshman Eamon Hall, to take the 15-6 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Maciel led Assumption on offense with two goals and one assist. McNulty added two goals in the setback.
-Racalbuto led Adelphi with three goals and one assist in the victory. Adelphi had 10 different goal scorers on the day.
-First year Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Saint John the Baptist DHS) made 13 saves in net for Assumption and falls to 1-6 on the season.
-Junior Ryan Erler made four saves in 30 minutes of play and improves to 2-0 in net for Adelphi.
-Adelphi outshot Assumption 48-28 (31-15 shots on goal).
-The Panthers picked up 36 ground balls and Assumption scooped up 27 on the day.
-The Panthers won 17-of-25 faceoffs.
