-The Lead: The ninth-seeded Assumption University men's lacrosse team defeated the eighth-seeded Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College, 10-7, on Wednesday during the Northeast-10 Conference Championship first-round game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Saint Michael's scored first when first year Dylan Morgan found sophomore Alex Chirgwin for his fifth goal of the season and the early 1-0 lead. After a scoreless seven minutes, Assumption put up back-to-back goals by first years Ryan Healey (Westwood, Mass. / Westwood / Bridgton Academy) and Kurt Brinkhaus (Needham, Mass. / Needham) to take a 2-1 edge at the end of the first quarter.
-Healey netted his second goal of the game just over 30 seconds into the second stanza to extend Assumption's led to 3-1. Under three minutes later, the Purple Knights responded with a goal by sophomore Max Katavolos to pull within one, 3-2. The quarter saw one more goal from Assumption sophomore Nolan Sheehan (Potomac, Md. / The Heights), and the Hounds took a 4-2 lead into the halftime break.
-Saint Michael's came out with the first goal of the third quarter as Katavolas scored his 21st goal of the season to bring the hosts within one (4-3). Assumption won the next face-off and senior Adam Becker (Waltham, Mass. / Waltham) scored on that possession to put them back up by two (5-3). Saint Michael's responded by winning the very next face-off and netting their own goal, another one by Katavolos, to stay within one at the 11:12 mark (5-4).
-The Hounds outscored the Purple Knights, 2-1 over the final eight minutes with goals by senior Nicholas Shanley (Milford, Conn. / Notre Dame of West Haven) and Sheehan to take the 7-5 lead heading into the final quarter.
-Assumption pulled ahead by three with a goal from Shanley to start the fourth quarter. Katavolos netted his fifth goal of the game and 24th of the season at the 11:01 mark to bring Saint Michael's within two, 8-6.
-The Hounds used back-to-back goals by senior Anthony D'Angelo (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) and Shanley to pull ahead by four with just 2:22 to play.
-The Purple Knights capitalized on a man-up opportunity with another goal from Katavolos at the 41-second mark, but that is as close as they would come as Assumption held on for the final three-goal victory, 10-7.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Shanley led Assumption on offense with three goals and one assist. Healey added two goals and one assist in the victory.
-Katavolos led Saint Michael's with six goals in the setback.
-First year Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Saint John the Baptist DHS) made an impressive 20 saves in net for Assumption and improves to 2-6 on the season.
-Senior Dominic Joy made 12 saves for the Purple Knights and falls to 3-8 on the season.
-The hosts outshot the Hounds 49-36 (28-22 shots on goal).
-Assumption won 10-of-21 face-offs.
