-The Lead: The Assumption University men's lacrosse team fell to the No. 9 ranked Saint Anselm College Hawks in the Northeast-10 Conference semifinal game on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks used 11 different goal scorers en route to the 20-goal victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Saint Anselm outscored the Hounds 6-2 to take an early four-goal lead at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks scored first on a tally by senior Matt Ward and Assumption responded with a goal by senior Nicholas Shanley (Milford, Conn. / Notre Dame of West Haven) to tie the game, 1-1. The Hawks put up five goals over the next four minutes before Assumption broke up the run with a man-up goal by senior Anthony D'Angelo (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) with 52 seconds on the clock (6-2).
-The Hawks went on an 8-1 run in the second quarter to take a 14-3 lead at the half. Sophomore Jack Andrews tallied two goals and one assist in the run while senior Ryan Richards added two goals for the hosts.
-The Hawks did not allow a goal scored in the third quarter, scoring seven unanswered goals to pull ahead 21-3 heading into the final 15 minutes.
-The fourth quarter was the closest match-up of the game with Saint Anselm edging Assumption in scoring, 4-2. The Hounds started scoring in the fourth with a goal by Shanley (21-4). The Hawks scored their four goals over the next seven minutes to pull ahead 25-4 with just two minutes to play. The Hounds used an unassisted tally by senior Anthony Rausa (Littleton, Mass. / Littleton) to close out the game as the Hawks secured the 25-5 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Saint Anselm used 11 different goal scorers in the victory. Ward led the hosts with four goals and four assists on the day. Andrews added three goals and two assists in the victory.
-Shanley led Assumption with two goals in the setback.
-First year Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Saint John the Baptist DHS) made 13 saves in net for Assumption and fell to 2-7 on the season.
-Senior CJ Hart made seven saves in goal for Saint Anselm and improved to 11-0 on the season.
-The Hawks outshot the Hounds 66-22.
-The Hounds won 14-of-32 face-offs.
