Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University women's basketball team dropped a rematch against Saint Anselm by a 60-47 score at Laska Gymnasium on Thursday evening.
After graduate student Meghan Cramb (New Boston, N.H.) scored the opening basket of the contest by putting back her own miss at the 6:33 mark, Saint Anselm (12-10, NE-10 8-7) rattled off 12 straight points and never looked back. Gabby Turco hit a pair of 3-point field goals during the hot stretch which was capped by Peyton Steinman, and the Hawks found themselves up by 10 through one quarter of play.
Junior Monica Spain (Braintree, Mass.) sank a free throw and Cramb followed with a layup to bring the margin down to seven at 17-10 to begin the second, but the visitors quickly regained a double- digit lead by getting a trifecta from McKenzy Ouellette. Turgo scored her lone basket of the quarter to close out the scoring, and Saint Anselm found itself up by a 31-18 margin at recess.
Assumption made its biggest run of the game by scoring seven straight to begin the third, as Cramb hit 3-pointer and freshman Marina Callahan (Burlington, Mass.) converted consecutive buckets to slice the margin down to eight with 7:02 left. The Greyhounds kept chipping away and made it a one-possession game at 35-32 when senior Caterina Fonseca (Enfield, Conn.) sank two charity shots to crate.
However, that was as close as the hosts would come. The Hawks ended the quarter on a 9-3 run and extended their lead to as many as 21 in the fourth and final stanza, which was more than enough insurance to avenge last week's loss to the Greyhounds in New Hampshire.
Steinman led the way for Saint Anselm, which outrebounded the hosts by a 46-24 margin. She posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 boards to go along with five steals. Turco finished with 17 points.
Cramb paced Assumption in the loss with a 14-point effort by shooting 6-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from long range, and grabbing five boards. Senior Lauren Hammersley (Garden City, N.Y.) netted 15 points off the bench and drilled three shots from downtown. Callahan tallied a game-high three blocked shots.
Assumption (10-11, NE-10 7-9) continues a three-game homestand when it hosts Stonehill on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
