Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Ja'Lyn Armstrong (Baltimore, Md.) scored 27 points in leading the Assumption University women's basketball team to a 67-57 road victory over Saint Michael's on Tuesday evening.
Beginning with a 3-point field goal by graduate student Meghan Cramb (New Boston, N.H.), Assumption took control and would lead from wire-to-wire. Junior Monica Spain (Braintree, Mass.) converted a layup to make it 17-10 with under two minutes remaining in the first, and the Greyhounds eventually carried a six-point lead into the first break.
After the Knights came within four on a pair of free throws by Paige Slaven, Assumption broke loose by scoring 10 unanswered and going on a 10-2 run. Senior Lauren Hammersley (Garden City, N.Y.) capped the run with a trifecta from the right arc to give the Greyhounds their largest lead of the half at 30-15 with 3:46 left. Saint Michael's attempted to come back, but back-to-back layups by Armstrong in the final minute gave any momentum back to the visitors and a 35-22 advantage at recess.
Saint Michael's (3-15, NE-10 1-11) chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter and brought the margin down to single digits when Makayla Brake sank a jumper from the top of the key to make it 44-36 at the 3:22 mark. Nicole Anderson became the 21st player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points by driving in for a layup to make it a six-point ballgame, and Slaven added a free throw to end the quarter with the Greyhounds leading by only a single possession at 44-41.
The Greyhounds nearly surpassed their scoring output in the third quarter during the early minutes of the fourth by going on another run to pull away. Freshman Marina Callahan (Burlington, Mass.) extended the lead back to twin figures by making two charity shots with 6:13 left, creating a 57-47 score, and the Knights would never recover. Armstrong stole the ball and went coast to coast, making it 66-54 with just over a minute left before making two free throws down the stretch to put the game on ice.
Armstrong scored 27 points to lead the way for Assumption, which outscored its opponent by a 42-20 margin in the paint and had an 18-3 advantage in fastbreak points in the contest. She shot a blistering 13-of-17 from the floor while also grabbing six rebounds and collecting four steals. Cramb netted 12 points, while Hammersley finished with nine points and five assists. Spain added five steals.
