Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Nolan Sheehan (Potomac, Md.) factored into six goals as the Assumption University men's lacrosse team defeated Georgian Court by a 15-10 score in its home opener at Brian Kelly Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The teams traded goals throughout the first quarter and found themselves deadlocked at 3-3 through 15 minutes of action. But after Ryan Rigby finished a pass from Tallen Smith to give the visitors another one-goal lead at 4-3 35 seconds into the second, Assumption closed out the frame on a 6-0 run to take control of the contest. Freshman Cameron Theriault (Westfield, Mass.) netted two straight to start the hot streak, and sophomore Jackson Bulger (West Simsbury, Conn.) netted a man-up goal with 14 seconds remaining to give the Greyhounds a 9-4 advantage heading into the break.
The second quarter would prove to be the difference, as both teams also netted three goals apiece in the third and fourth frames. Sheehan most notably netted all four of his markers and tallied one assist in the second half alone, allowing the Greyhounds to come away with the five-goal victory.
Sheehan racked up four goals and two assists to lead the way for Assumption, which outshot the Lions 49-41 and recorded its first victory of the season even though the Lions won 24 of the 29 faceoffs and had a 36-30 edge in ground balls. The junior also picked up three ground balls. Theriault netted a hat trick, added two assists, and picked up a team-leading five ground balls, while freshman JD Frey (La Canada, Calif.) finished the game with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y.) picked up the win between the posts by making 11 saves.
Georgian Court, which committed 23 turnovers in the game to Assumption's nine, got two goals apiece from Daniel Burnham, Joe Zerr, Smith, and Rigby. Burnham also contributed two assists and scooped up three ground balls. Justin Iannarone won 24 of the 29 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 13 ground balls, while goalie Sebastian Farah made 17 stops in the loss.
Assumption (1-2) will next open up Northeast-10 Conference play when it travels to face Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon. The opening faceoff is slated for 12 p.m.
