Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Cameron Theriault (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Healey (Westwood, Mass.) each factored into five goals in leading the Assumption University men's lacrosse team to a 14-11 victory over Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference action at Brian Kelly Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Six goals were scored on man-up opportunities with each team converting on three of its five chances. Saint Michael's took its first and only lead at 3-2 when Sebastian Simonson scored a man-up marker with 1:08 left in the opening quarter, but sophomore CJ Wiper (Sandwich, Mass.) found the back of the net before the end of the frame to knot the score for the third time at 3-all.
After the Purple Knights tied the game up for the fourth time at 4-4 on a man-up tally by Max Katavolos, Assumption embarked on a decisive 6-0 run to move ahead for good. Theriault scored three times to lead the Greyhounds during the stretch which put the hosts in control by the midway point of the third quarter.
Saint Michael's (1-7, NE10 0-3) did not go away quietly and came within three goals on a pair of occasions. However, sophomore goalie Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y.) and the Greyhound defense would not let the visitors come any closer. Freshman Nick Polymeros (Natick, Mass.) won the final faceoff, and the hosts were able to nearly run out the clock to put a stamp on their first conference win of the season.
Theriault scored four goals and Healey added four assists along with four ground balls to lead Assumption, which outshot its opponent by a 49-30 margin, held a commanding 42-20 advantage in ground balls, and won 18 faceoffs. Sophomore Dylan Chapel (Griswold, Conn.) and Polymeros were each 9-of-14 on faceoff attempts, while Polymeros also picked up seven ground balls. Malone made six saves and caused two turnovers to earn the win between the posts.
Katavolos scored a game-high five goals and Sebastian Simonson registered a hat trick to pace Saint Michael's in the setback. Katavolos also finished with five ground balls, and netminder Spencer Sardino made 14 saves.
Assumption (2-3, NE10 1-1) will next travel to face Bentley on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
