No. 11 Pace Pulls Away From Men's Lacrosse With Strong Fourth Quarter

Box Score

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Despite never trailing until the second half, the Assumption University men's lacrosse team was dealt a 15-9 road loss by No. 11 Pace on Tuesday afternoon.

Assumption got on the board first when Ryan Healey found the back of the net at the 12:30 mark and never trailed in the opening half. The Setters tied the game up twice at 1-1 in the middle of the first quarter and 3-3 at the beginning of the second, but the Greyhounds responded with three straight unassisted markers by different players to pull ahead. Even though the hosts ended the second with two consecutive goals of their own, Assumption still carried a 6-5 advantage into the recess.

The second half featured three early ties between the squads as they kept battling for the upper hand on the scoreboard. But after Healey netted a man-up goal to make it 10-9 in favor of the Setters, Pace got a goal from Rafael Rodriguez in the waning seconds of the third and then outscored the Greyhounds by a 4-0 margin in the fourth to come away with the win.

Pace (9-2, NE10 5-2), which outshot the Greyhounds by a 49-38 margin and finished with a 15-13 edge in faceoffs won, had three players who factored into five goals in the contest. Jake Veres scored five times, Tim Cairo had three goals and two assists, and Kyle Casey contributed two markers and three helpers. Maxwell Streety won 15 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls, while Griffin Shiland had four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Goalie Louis Ragusa made 10 saves.

Sophomore CJ Wiper (Sandwich, Mass.) and classmate Brady McNulty (Tolland, Conn.) each registered three goals and an assist to lead Assumption offensively. McNulty also scooped up three ground balls. Jack Galvin (Yarmouthport, Mass.), another sophomore finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers to headline the defensive effort, and classmate Dylan Chapel (Griswold, Conn.) won nine of his 15 faceoff attempts. Sophomore Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y.) turned away 14 shots in the losing effort.

Assumption (2-8, NE10 1-6) will look to remain competitive and in the hunt for a spot in the conference's postseason tournament when it next hosts Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
