Men's Lacrosse Hangs On For 10-7 Win Over Saint Rose On Senior Day

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore goalie Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y.) made 15 saves between the posts in leading the Assumption University men's lacrosse team to a 10-7 victory over the College of Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon at Brian Kelly Stadium.

The Greyhounds, who honored their five-member senior class prior to the contest, held off a late surge by the Golden Knights to pick up their second conference win of the season.

After Saint Rose got on the scoreboard first at the 13:16 mark, the hosts responded with seven unanswered and never trailed again. Sophomore Ryan Healey (Westwood, Mass.) scored twice to give Assumption a 5-1 lead through one quarter of action before freshman Cameron Theriault (Westfield, Mass.) set up sophomore Sam Maciel (Narragansett, R.I.) and found the back of the net himself early in the second. Theriault closed out the scoring in the second with 3:01 remaining, and the Greyhounds carried a commanding 9-3 lead into the break.

Both goalies and defenses took over in the third quarter, as the teams only combined for one goal during the 15-minute frame when Gabriel Nish scored with exactly 13 minutes on the clock. The Golden Knight's Ryan Fleming stopped all six shots he faced on target, while Malone made four saves of his own.

Saint Rose (7-7, NE10 2-5) continued to chip away at the deficit in the fourth while keeping the Greyhounds off the scoreboard. The Golden Knights netted three straight goals to suddenly make it a two-possession game with 4:53 left on an unassisted marker by Eddie Baker.

However, Assumption won the ensuing faceoff on a Golden Knight violation and made them pay for it. Healey fired the ball home to give the Greyhounds some breathing room with 4:22 on the clock.

The visitors didn't go away quietly. After gaining possession on a Greyhound faceoff violation, the Golden Knights rocketed back-to-back shots. But the Assumption defense stood tall, blocking both of them and the ball was cleared away. Saint Rose was unable to score on two additional offensive possessions, and a successful clear courtesy of senior Colin Orleman (Norwell, Mass.) with just over a minute allowed the Greyhounds to run out the clock and escape with the victory.

Malone earned the win or Assumption, which won 12 faceoffs and had a 41-35 shot advantage, by most notably making eight of his 15 saves in the second quarter and four in the third. Theriault and Healey each netted a hat trick, while junior Nolan Sheehan (Potomac, Md.) assisted on three markers. Sophomore Cooper Joyal (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up four ground balls, including a crucial one down the stretch, and classmate Aidan Boyle (Westfield, Mass.) caused two turnovers.

John Loughlin and Nish each netted a pair of goals for Saint Rose, while Loughlin also added an assist. Three different players picked up three ground balls, and Fleming stopped 19 shots.

Assumption (3-8, NE10 2-6) will next visit American International College on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
