Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Ryan Healey (Westwood, Mass.) scored four goals, including three in the decisive final frame, in leading the Assumption University men's lacrosse team to a 14-8 victory over American International College on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Greyhounds moved into a tie for seventh place in the conference standings with one game left in the regular season.
After Rusty Stone finished a pass from Devon Walker to tie the game at 8-8 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Assumption ended the game with six unanswered goals to earn the win. Healey started the run with an unassisted marker at 9:22 and scored two more times during the timeframe that decided the final outcome. Freshman Cameron Theriault (Westfield, Mass.) also scored twice during the stretch, including the final marker with 2:45 remaining.
Despite surrendering the game's first goal, AIC (1-13, NE10 0-9) jumped out to a 4-1 advantage by the end of the first quarter with Jason Vickery and Rusty Stone each netting two goals apiece. Even though the Greyhounds started to come back, the Yellow Jackets maintained their lead throughout the second and carried a slim 5-4 advantage into halftime.
Beginning with a strike off the stick of sophomore CJ Wiper (Sandwich, Mass.), Assumption opened the scoring in the third and went ahead by the buzzer. Wiper also gave the Greyhounds their first lead since the opening minutes of the game by finding the back of the net at 7:06.
Even tough the Yellow Jackets tied the game for the fourth time in the final frame, the visitors carried the momentum they got in the third into the final frame. Healey and Theriault caught fire offensively, while relieving freshman goalie Noah Mauretti (Rehoboth, Mass.) only allowed one ball past him to help seal the win.
Mauretti earned the victory for Assumption by just yielding that one goal in the fourth when the game was decided. The Greyhounds outshot the Yellow Jackets, 52-29, had a 17-9 advantage in faceoff wins courtesy of freshman Nick Polymeros (Natick, Mass.) and sophomore Dylan Chapel (Griswold, Conn.), and they easily won the ground game by a dominating 50-27 margin. In addition to Healey's four markers, Theriault and sophomore Jackson Bulger (West Simsbury, Conn.) finished with two goals and an assist apiece. Bulger also picked up six ground balls, and Theriault caused two turnovers.
Stone scored three goals for AIC, while Tyler Shrewsbury had two assists and five ground balls. Devon Walker finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, and goalie Nick Mee suffered the loss despite making 11 saves.
Assumption (4-8, NE10 3-6) will look to conclude its 2022 campaign on a high note when it hosts No. 16 Saint Anselm on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
