Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Assumption University baseball team split a pair of seven-inning games at the University of Bridgeport Saturday afternoon. After taking game one 12-3, the Greyhounds fell in the nightcap on a walk-off homerun by the Purple Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE - Assumption University 12, University of Bridgeport 3
Assumption started fast, as Connor Wironen scored in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Jared Berardino. Bridgeport got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, as they plated three runs. Assumption matched the Purple Knights with three runs of their own in the top of the third to regain the lead. Wironen crossed the plate again, scoring on a Jack Barry RBI single. After a Cole Durkin double, Berardino doubled home both Durkin and Barry, making it 4-3 Blue and White.
 
The Greyhounds continued to pile on the runs, as they tacked on five runs in the top of the fourth. Wironen doubled home Jake Hamel before scoring on a Barry two-run shot. Emilio Acosta singled home Durkin before Kevin Cox was plucked with the bases loaded, sending Berardino home on the play.
 
Cox and Hamel finished the scoring in game one, as Cox drove in Christopher Rabias before walking home on a Hamel homerun.
 
MacGuire O'Sullivan went the distance for Assumption, as the righty tossed 7.0 innings, scattering six hits while striking out seven.
 
GAME TWO – University of Bridgeport 3, Assumption University 2
Berardino carried his hot bat into game two as he drove in Wironen on an RBI single in the top of the first. Christian Ortiz tied the game in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center.
 
The game would remain tied at 1-1 until the top of the seventh inning, as Cody Smith scored on an error by the Bridgeport shortstop. The hosts would gain their first lead of the second game with one out in the bottom of the seventh, as Jeremy had a two-run pinch-hit homerun to give the Purple Knights a 3-2 walk-off win.
 
Griffin O'Connor tossed 6.1 innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, and eight strikeouts.
