PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - This weekend, the Assumption University women's rowing team traveled to Pennsauken, New Jersey, for the Knecht Cup Regatta for their second race of the spring season. Day one of racing was canceled due to high winds, forcing a shortened schedule for day two of racing on Sunday.
Under sunny skies with a strong crosswind and gusts reaching as high as 30 mph, the Greyhounds took to the Cooper River to face off against the University of Pittsburgh, University of Rhode Island Rowing Club, and Stockton University in the women's D1 club/D2 varsity eight. Despite the rough conditions, the team completed the course in 8:30, behind URI (7:21), Stockton (7:39), and Pitt (7:53). Overall, the Greyhounds finished in 12
th place in the event ahead of the University of Pittsburgh B boat (8:32) and ahead of D2 Barry University (8:41).
Isabella Baker coxed the crew with
Bella Perryman in the stroke seat, followed by
Olivia Shan,
Alisia Cacciola,
Cassidy O'Hara, Katie Ickes,
Riley Molongoski,
Sydney Morrissey, and
Carly Duval sitting bow.
In the D1 club/D2 varsity fours events, the Greyhounds finished fifth in their heat and 15
th overall with a time of 10:43. The boat had an unfortunate equipment mishap when one of the rower's oars became dislodged from the oarlock, forcing the boat to a complete stop with about 700 meters to go in the 2000-meter race.
Brianna Rawlston coxed the four stroked by Izzy Anzalone, followed by Katie Ickes, Pri Rajesh, and Luwam Weldegiorgis sitting bow.
Last weekend, the Greyhounds hosted their first of three races at Lake Quinsigamind, with the URI club team, Bryant University, and D'Youville visiting the lake. The varsity 8+ finished in fourth place with a time of 8:16 behind the URI club (6:58), Bryant (7:18), and the URI B boat (7:30). The four finished also finished fourth behind Bryant (7:50), URI (8:08) and D'Youville (9:09), completing the 2000m course in 9:50.
"While we're still trailing in the results, I couldn't be prouder of this group as they continually demonstrate a willingness to embrace the challenges in front of them," said
David Deiuliis, Women's Rowing Coach. "I have no doubt this young team will grow and improve as the season continues."
The Greyhounds are back in action next weekend when they host Bowdoin College, Bryant University, The US Coast Guard Academy, Mt. Holyoke College, and Simmons University in their second home race of the spring season at the Donahue Rowing Center on Lake Quinsigamond.
