WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University Department of Athletics mourns the passing of former football head coach Sean Mahoney, who passed away on Friday, June 12th, after a courageous battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), surrounded by his loving family.
Mahoney served as head coach of the Greyhounds from 1998 to 2004, helping guide the program during its early years in the Northeast 10 Conference. He coached five First Team All-NE10 Players and seven second teamers, including the 1999 NE10 Rookie of the Year, Kevin Clive. A Worcester State graduate and longtime football coach in Central Massachusetts, Mahoney made a lasting impact across the region through his work at Assumption, Shrewsbury High School, and Marlborough High School.
Following his time at Assumption, Mahoney became a fixture at Marlborough, where he continued to mentor student-athletes while also coaching girls' basketball and tennis. He was named the MIAA Football Coach of the Year for the 2020-21 school year and was later inducted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
A respected coach, educator, and mentor, Mahoney will be remembered for his commitment to the young people he coached and the countless lives he influenced throughout Central Massachusetts.
Visitation for Sean will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 4-8 pm in the Short & Rowe Funeral Home, 95 W. Main St., Marlborough, MA.
Overflow parking will be at Ward Park at the bottom of Orchid St., where a shuttle service will take you to the Funeral Home.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 11 am in St. Matthias Church, 409 Hemenway St, Marlborough, MA.
Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Wilson St., Marlborough, MA.
Continuing his legacy of giving back, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sean's name to Mission MSA
