Worcester, Mass. (October 26) -- The Hounds women's soccer team defeated UMass. Lowell, 2-1, behind two goals from Andrea Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) and a strong performance from freshman goalie Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro). Edgin made eight saves in the victory while allowing one goal.

The Hounds took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute, when Bates took a pass from Kelsey Purcell (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater), and beat the keeper. Assumption extended its lead to two goals just after halftime, when Bates was on the receiving end of a pass from Elizabeth Blasser (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) in the 47th minute, and again, Bates found the back of her net. The goals were her second and third of the season.

UMass. Lowell cut the lead to one on an unassisted goal by Julia Donigian in the 71st minute, and put constant pressure on for the final 20 minutes, but Edgin made save after save and the River Hawk's couldn't equalize the score.

Edgin finished with eight saves in the win, while Jill Carlson made five saves in the losing effort. UMass. Lowell outshot the Hounds, 17-9, while seven of Edgin's saves came in the second half.

UMass. Lowell was ranked No. 3 in the latest NCAA East Region poll, behind the unbeaten University of Bridgeport, and Northeast-10 Conference foe The College of Saint Rose.

The Hounds improve to 4-11-1 overall and 2-11-1 in the Northeast-10 while UMass. Lowell falls to 10-4-2 and 9-3-2 in the conference.
