Greyhounds Wrap Up NTC Spring Games With 6-5 Record

Clermont, Fla. -- The Assumption College softball team wrapped up its 2011 spring trip to the NTC Spring Games with a 6-5 overall mark. The Greyhounds dropped a 9-3 final to Alderson-Broaddus on Thursday in a game pushed back until later in the day due to rain in the area. That defeat was followed by a sweep of Cedarville and Hannibal-La Grange on Friday morning, with both finals coming by a 7-2 score.

Alderson-Broaddus 9, Assumption 3
A seven-run seventh inning helped Alderson-Broaddus come away with a 9-3 win over Assumption on Thursday afternoon at the NTC Spring Games.

Assumption jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning as freshman Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) led off with a triple to left and later scored for the early edge. In the top of the seventh, Alderson-Broaddus used a grand slam from Karrissa Ezell and a two-RBI double to left by Kat Powell to blow the game open at 7-1. They added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to account for the nine-run final. The Greyhounds tallied single runs in the second and fifth innings, including RBI hits from sophomore Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and sophomore Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk). Sophomore Rachel Hedge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) took the loss for the Hounds, going 1.2 innings and allowing five hits and six earned runs. Ashley Neff got the win for Alderson-Broaddus, scattering 10 hits with three earned runs, one walk and one strikeout.

Assumption 7, Cedarville 2
Assumption held Cedarville to just four hits as the Greyhounds defeated the Yellow Jackets by a 7-2 final on Friday morning.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Medeiros drew a two-out walk and came home on an RBI double to right by Bilodeau. The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the bottom of the second with an unearned run as Melissa Murphy reached on a one-out error and scored on an RBI double to right by Kelsey Warrington. Assumption regained the lead in the top of the fourth as Ashley Bilodeau (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) led off with a single to left, was sacrificed to second and came home on an RBI double to right center by Boris.

After another Warrington RBI double to right tied the game at 2-2 for the Yellow Jackets, the Greyhounds used a two-run sixth and three-run seventh to blow the game open. In the seventh, the Hounds got three straight RBI hits from Boris, Jalbert and Lisa Donato (East Hartford, Conn./East Catholic). Freshman Jennifer Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) went 4.1 innings for the win, giving up four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) threw 2.2 innings of perfect relief, including five strikeouts. Jenn Spann took the loss for Cedarville, going 5.1 innings and giving up seven hits and two earned runs.

Assumption 7, Hannibal-La Grange 2
Led by a three-run homer by Boris, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and came away with a 7-2 victory over Hannibal-La Grange in the final game of the NTC Spring Games for Assumption on Friday morning.

In the first, Robidoux led off the game with a single to left and came home on an RBI double to center by Bilodeau later in the inning. Robidoux added to the lead with a two-RBI double to left in the second before Boris made it a 6-0 game with her three-run blast. The Greyhounds completed their scoring in the fifth as Bilodeau led off with a double to left and she came home on the next batter as Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass./Bishop Feehan) hit an RBI double to left.

The Hounds kept the Trojans off the board until the bottom of the seventh as Megan Skinner and Jessica Nutt both reached with leadoff hits and came home on a two-RBI double to right by Kelli Black.

Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) got the win for the Greyhounds, scattering six hits over seven innings with two earned runs allowed and four strikeouts. Kachina Hudson took the loss for the Trojans, allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Greyhounds are back in action as the team opens Northeast-10 Conference play on March 26th as Pace University visits Worcester for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
