Clermont, Fla. (March 5) -- The Assumption softball team opened the 2011 season at the NTC Spring Games on Saturday morning in Clermont, Fla. The Greyhounds dropped a 10-2 final to Gannon University in six innings in game one before earning the split with a 4-2 victory over regional foe Felician College. Assumption now sits at 1-1 overall on the season.
In game one, the Greyhounds jumped on the board in the second inning when freshman Nicole Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) drove an RBI double to left field that scored senior Ashley Bilodeau (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic). Gannon answered back with four runs in the bottom of the third, including a two-run homer from Ashley Petrone. After Gannon extended the lead to 7-1 after four innings, the Greyhounds scored their second run of the game in the fifth as Boris led off the inning with a double to left and was driven by freshman Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central). Gannon added two more runs in the fifth and scored its final run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth.
Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) took the loss for Assumption, going 3.1 innings and giving up four hits while allowing seven runs and striking out four. Megan Dragon got the win for Gannon, going six innings while allowing two earned runs and scattering five hits with eight strikeouts. Boris and Robidoux each had a pair of hits for the Greyhounds, including two doubles for Boris.
In game two, the Golden Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the first after Tori Bradburn reached on an error and came home two batters later on a single to left by Carissa Trujillo. Assumption answered in the second as senior Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass./Bishop Feehan) led off the inning with a triple to right field and came home on an RBI single from Boris to tie the game at 1-1. The Greyhounds put together a five-hit, three-run fifth inning to push the lead to 4-1 as Assumption put together four straight singles with one out in the frame. Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk), Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) and Bilodeau all scored in the inning on RBI hits.
Felician got the lead down to a two-run game as Tiffany Deeubol led off the sixth with a double to left and came home two batters late on an RBI double to left from Amber Doran. The Golden Falcons got no closer though as Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) improved to 1-0 for the Greyhounds with a complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Durso scattered 10 hits while allowing just one earned run and walking none. Bradburn took the loss for the Golden Falcons, going six innings and allowing four runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Sunday afternoon as the team takes on Mercy College at 1 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. contest vs. Lock Haven.
