Clermont, Fla. (March 6) -- The Assumption softball team earned its second straight split on day two of the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Greyhounds defeated Mercy by a 2-1 final in the day's first game before dropping a 13-12 final in eight innings to Lock Haven (Pa.) in the second game. Overall, Assumption now sits at 2-2 on the season.
Assumption took the 2-1 final over Mercy as the Greyhounds scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior pitcher Casey Halajian (Quincy, Mass./Archbishop Williams) improved to 1-0 on the season with the victory. She went seven innings, scattering five hits and allowing one earned run while striking out eight and walking just one.
In game two, Lock Haven put up four unearned runs off Assumption starter Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet), who went 4+ innings, scattering nine hits while allowing seven runs overall and striking out three. Taking the loss for Assumption was junior Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem), who went 1.2 innings for the Greyhounds. Lock Haven scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth for the victory. The Greyhounds are back in action on Monday, March 7th as the team takes on Queens College (N.Y.) in a doubleheader at the NTC Spring Games. Game one is slated for 1:30 p.m., followed by a 3:30 p.m. start in game two.
