Clermont, Fla. (March 9) -- On day four of the NTC Spring Games on Wednesday morning, the Assumption softball team split for the fourth straight day and now sits at 4-4 overall on the season. The Greyhounds lost game one to West Virginia Wesleyan by a 7-2 final before taking a 6-1 victory over West Chester (Pa.) in the second game.
Game One: West Virginia Wesleyan 7, Assumption 2
West Virginia Wesleyan scored three unearned runs in a four-run sixth inning as the Bobcats downed the Greyhounds by a 7-2 final. The Bobcats struck first on just the second batter of the game as Alex Whisner reached on a walk and came home on a triple to left by Shelby Carlson. Assumption tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Ashley Bilodeau (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) led off with a double to left and scored on an RBI double to right field by Nicole Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner). WVW tallied four runs in the sixth and added a pair in the seventh on a two-run homer by Kashilla Young to account for their seven-run output. Assumption scored in the bottom of the seventh as Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) led off the inning with a single to center and came around on a two-out, RBI double to left by Boris.
Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) took the loss for the Greyhounds, going the distance and allowing seven runs (four earned) while scattering seven hits and striking out nine. Hillary Perez-Ashley was the winner for the Bobcats as she allowed two runs with two strikeouts and five hits allowed.
Game Two: Assumption 6, West Chester 1
Junior pitcher Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) threw seven innings and allowed just five hits and one run as the Greyhounds defeated West Chester by a 6-1 final. The Greyhounds also had a pair of RBI by both Bilodeau and Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) in the victory. Bernadette Fuentes (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) reached on an error by the shortstop in the third inning and came home on an RBI single to left by Palumbo for the early 1-0 edge. The Greyhounds had hits in every inning and came up big in the top of the fifth with a four-run inning and a 5-0 advantage. Leading the offense in that inning was Bilodeau with a two-RBI double to left, along with an RBI hit from Jalbert. Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) drove in the final Assumption run of the day as Jalbert came around in the seventh to make it a 6-0 score. West Chester got on the board with a lone run in the bottom of the frame to account for the 6-1 final.
Durso was the winning pitcher for Assumption, while Devon Utterback took the loss for the Golden Rams.
Assumption is back in action on Thursday, March 10 as the Greyhounds take on Alderson-Broaddus at 9 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. game with Seton Hill.
