Hounds Drop Road Doubleheader to Chargers, 4-1 and 9-1

West Haven, Conn. (April 20) -- On Wednesday afternoon, the Assumption softball team dropped a road doubleheader at the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Greyhounds fell in game one by a 4-1 final before dropping game two in six innings, 9-1.

New Haven jumped on top in the bottom of the second as Lindsey Couturier led off with a single to third base. She was sacrificed to second, advanced to third on a fly out to center and came home on an RBI single to left center by Brooke Fisher. The Chargers kept up the pressure up in the fifth with a trio of runs to take control with a 4-0 advantage. Brandy Dianno scored on an RBI groundout, along with Chelsea Harold coming on a fielder's choice and Christina Gelardi scoring on a wild pitch from Assumption junior Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem).

The Hounds got on the board in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases with one out. After a foul out to first base by senior Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass./Bishop Feehan), shortstop Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) singled to left to score freshman Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) to cut the lead to 4-1. That was as close as the Greyhounds would get though as New Haven starter Alana Wesche picked up the win to improve to 10-5 on the season. Durso took the loss for the Greyhounds, dropping to 9-6 overall in five innings pitched. Freshman Jennifer Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) pitched a hitless inning of relief.

New Haven jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first in game two as Harold led off with a triple and came home on a sacrifice bunt by Dianno. The Greyhounds answered back in the top of the next inning though with a single run to tie the game at 1-1. Gordon led off the inning with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a single thru the right side by freshman right fielder Nicole Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner).

The Chargers came right back with a two-run homer by Fisher in the bottom of the inning, scoring Shannon Angehr as well after she reached on a one-out double to left for the 3-1 edge. New Haven pushed that lead up to a 5-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth on a two-RBI double down the left field line by Gelardi that scored Harold and Lucy Francisco. New Haven added a run in the fifth and Gelardi hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to close out the 9-1 victory.

Micah Stonesifer picked up the win in 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, improving to 11-7 on the season.  For Assumption, junior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) took the loss to fall to 8-7 as she lasted five innings, giving up five earned runs.

With the pair of losses, the Greyhounds drop to 20-15 overall and 14-8 in Northeast-10 play, while the Chargers improve to 23-12 overall and 13-7 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, April 26th as the Greyhounds travel to American International for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
