Springfield, Mass. (April 26) -- After pulling out a 2-0 final in game, Assumption completed a doubleheader sweep of American International on Tuesday afternoon with a 7-0 victory in game two at Judy Groff Field. The Hounds have now won 13 of their last 18 games and remain in the middle of the Northeast-10 Conference playoff race at 16-8 in league play.
The Greyhounds, held hitless thru the first four innings by AIC starter Kristen Dolan, broke thru in the top of the fifth with a pair of two-out runs for the only offense of the game. Senior first baseman Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass./Bishop Feehan) led the inning off with a double to left center and eventually came home on the two-out double to right center from senior Ashley Bilodeau (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic). Senior catcher Bernadette Fuentes (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) kept the inning going on an RBI single to left to score Bilodeau for the 2-0 advantage.
Junior pitcher Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) gave up just three hits with seven strikeouts for the win and improved to 10-6 on the season with the victory. Dolan took the loss for the Yellow Jackets to fall to 7-8 overall as she scattered four hits and also struck out seven.
After five scoreless innings in game two, Assumption struck for a pair of runs in the sixth for the 2-0 lead. With two outs, Fuentes singled to center field to score freshman Nicole Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) and chase AIC starting pitcher Bethany Grimes after 5.2 innings. The Hounds added to the lead in the top of the seventh as Bilodeau singled to left center to score Gordon and sophomore Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk). Assumption added an unearned run by Palumbo and a two-RBI single down the right field line by Fuentes to cap off the scoring in the 7-0 final. The Yellow Jackets had just four runners get into scoring position and only one advance past second base as the Greyhounds completed the sweep of the Yellow Jackets.
Junior Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) went the distance for the Hounds in her 11th complete game of the season, scattering five hits and striking out seven to improve to 9-7. Grimes took the loss for the Yellow Jackets, falling to 3-5 overall.
With the sweep, the Greyhounds now sit at 22-15 overall and 16-8 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 17-23 overall and 13-13 in league play. Assumption is back in action on Thursday, April 28 as the Greyhounds travel to Saint Anselm for a 3 p.m. doubleheader in Manchester, N.H.
