Manchester, N.H. (April 29) -- After dropping a 9-3 final at Saint Anselm in game one, the Assumption softball team earned a split with the Hawks on Friday afternoon as the Hounds defeated Saint Anselm by an 8-0 final in five innings in game two in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Greyhounds improve to 23-16 overall and 17-9 in Northeast-10 play and remain in the hunt for the NE-10 regular-season title with four regular-season games remaining.
In game one, the Hawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Greyhounds got on the board. With one out in the top of the fifth, freshman Nicole Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) launched a pinch-hit homer to cut the lead to 7-1. After the Hawks made it an 8-1 game, Assumption closed out its game-one scoring in the top of the sixth as senior Ashley Bilodeau (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) doubled to left center to score Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) and Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass./Bishop Feehan). Liz Trafton had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for the Hawks as Saint Anselm secured the 9-3 final score. Junior Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) took the loss for the Hounds to drop to 10-7 overall, while Shannon Dalton improves to 13-6 for Saint Anselm.
In the second, Assumption took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as freshman Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) scored on an error. The Hounds added to the lead with a single run in the second by freshman Nicole Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and pushed it to a 5-0 edge in the fourth, led by a two-run homer from freshman Kolby Davenport (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack). In the top of the fifth, Assumption struck for three more runs on RBI hits from Bilodeau, Boris and Caitlin Clary (Belmont, N.H./Belmont) to account for the 8-0 final. Junior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) pitched five innings of one-hit softball to pick up the win for Assumption and improve to 10-7 overall, while Kelly DeSormier falls to 2-5 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Franklin Pierce for a Noon doubleheader. The Greyhounds wrap up the regular season on Sunday at Noon, hosting Saint Michaels at Marois Field beginning at Noon in Worcester.
