Worcester, Mass. -- The Assumption College softball team honored their graduating seniors before their double-header with Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, then went out and won both games, taking the first game 7-2, and the second, 6-2. Sophomore second baseman Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) was a combined five-for-seven over the two games, with two home runs and five RBI.
Prior to game one, first baseman Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass./Bishop Feehan), third baseman Ashley Bilodeau (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) and catcher Bernadette Fuentes (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) were recognized by fans, family, teammates and coaches for their accomplishments during their athletic careers at Assumption.
In game one, junior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) came up big for the Greyhounds, piching a complete game with ten strikeouts and allowing only two earned runs. Freshman center fielder Tanya Robidoux (Hookset, N.H./Manchester Central) went two-for-four with three RBI. Fuentes had two RBI including a single in the bottom of the fifth that scored Bilodeau. Medeiros was perfect at the plate, going three-for-three with a walk and two RBI.
In game two, Robidoux had an RBI single in the second inning to put Assumption up 2-0. Then with Assumption up 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Medeiros hit a three-run home run to give the Greyhounds all the run support they would need. Assumption pitchers Casey Halajian (Quincy, Mass./Archbishop Williams), Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) and Lowrey combined to hold the Ravens to one earned run.
With their wins on Saturday, the Greyhounds are now 25-16 with an 19-9 record in the Northeast-10, while Franklin Pierce falls to 10-31 and 8-21 record in the conference. Assumption will face Saint Michael's at home on Sunday, still competing for the number one overall seed in the Northeast-10 conference playoffs.
