Garden City, N.Y. (April 6) -- Junior pitcher Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) tossed a no-hitter in game one for the Greyhounds as Assumption earned a road split with Adelphi on Wednesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. The Greyhounds took the first game by a 4-0 final before dropping game two, 5-2. The Hounds have now split the first three league doubleheaders of the season.
Game one remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Assumption struck for a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) led off the inning with a single to right, followed by a bunt single by sophomore Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner). After a fielder's choice groundout, senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) drew a walk to load the bases with one out.
After a Greyhound strikeout, senior Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass./Bishop Feehan) drew a walk for the first run, scoring Jalbert from third. Freshman Nicole Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) singled to drive in sophomore Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) with the second run to make it a 2-0 lead in the fourth.
Assumption added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the game-one scoring. Robidoux scored with two outs in the fifth with an unearned run after reaching on an error by the third baseman, while Palumbo scored on an RBI groundout in the sixth.
Durso went the distance for the team's first no-hitter of the season, striking out six and walking just two to improve to 6-2 overall on the season. Leighann Bell took the loss for the Panthers, giving up three earned runs in seven innings.
Assumption picked up right where it left off in the top of the first in game two as Robidoux again led off with a single. After a strikeout, Medeiros hit her first home run of the season to put the Hounds ahead 2-0. The game remained that way until the bottom of the third until the Panthers struck with a three-run homer from Shay Craig for a 3-2 advantage. The Panthers added a pair in the fourth as well, putting together a pair of hits and scoring on a wild pitch and an illegal pitch with one out in the inning.
Junior Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) took the loss to fall to 2-5 overall, scattering seven hits while allowing five earned runs with seven strikeouts. Katie Andrews picked up the win in 6.2 innings of relief for the Panthers, giving up just four hits with three strikeouts.
Assumption is now 9-8 overall and 3-3 in Northeast-10 play, while Adelphi is 9-17 overall and 3-5 in the league. The Greyhounds are back in action on Thursday afternoon as the team travels to Post University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
