Post Sweeps Greyhounds in Non-Conference Doubleheader

Waterbury, Conn. -- On Thursday afternoon, the Assumption College softball team dropped a doubleheader to Post University in non-conference play in Waterbury, Conn. The Eagles took game one by a 6-5 final, followed by a 6-3 score in game two. The sweep is the first of the Greyhounds this season.

In game one, the Greyhounds jumped on the board in the top of the first to stake to the early 1-0 lead. Freshman Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second and scored on an RBI double to left field by Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk). The Eagles got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the third though as Post put together seven hits and six runs, chasing Greyhound starting pitcher Jennifter Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) with one out in the inning. Junior Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) came in to relieve Lattal, going 3.2 innings and allowing three hits with no earned runs and three strikeouts.

The Greyhounds put up four runs in the top of the fourth to get right back into the game at 6-5. Robidoux reached on an error, followed by a walk by Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner). Medeiros followed that up with her second two-RBI double of the game to score Robidoux and Jalbert, followed by a two-run homer by Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) to make it 6-5. The Eagles kept the Greyhound offense quiet over the last three innings though for the win. Lattal drops to 4-2 overall on the season with the loss for Assumption.

In the second game, the Eagles were the ones that took a 1-0 lead in the first before the Greyhounds answered with a single run in the top of the third. In that inning, Bernadette Fuentes (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) led off with a single to left and eventually scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game. The Eagles put together three runs in the third with two outs in the inning on three hits, taking a 3-1 advantage into the fourth. Assumption added unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings by Fuentes and Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass./Bishop Feehan), but were unable to come away with the victory. Taking the loss for the Greyhounds was junior Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem), who dropped to 6-3 on the season after allowing six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

With the losses, Assumption now drops to 9-10 overall, while Post improves to 12-14 on the season. The Greyhounds are back in action on Saturday, April 9th as the team travels to Bentley for a Northeast-10 doubleheader beginning at Noon in Waltham.
