New Haven took the opening kickoff down deep into the red zone before the Hounds forced a fumble at the one-yard line, which was recovered by junior Emanuel Riggins (Dorchester, Mass./Boston College HS). Assumption put together a drive that stalled out around midfield and on the punt attempt, the Chargers blocked the kick and had the ball in the red zone again. With 6:04 left in the opening quarter, quarterback Ronnie Nelson found an open Chris Ruffin for the 16-yard touchdown strike. On the ensuing kickoff, the Chargers forced another fumble and recovered the ball at the two-yard line. Just one play later, Mike DeCaro rushed to his right and was stopped, but reversed field and ran to the left pylon for the touchdown. The extra-point attempt was wide and the Chargers jumped out to the 13-0 lead.
New Haven added to the lead with a 35-yard field goal from Chris Scifo to make it a 16-0 score late in the first quarter. On the ensuing Assumption drive, a pass attempt by junior Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) was deflected and then intercepted, giving the Chargers three forced turnovers in the first period. The Hounds got on the board less than four minutes into the second as Jordan found Neil Harrington (Bridgewater, Mass/Bridgewater-Raynham) on the left side around the three-yard line and Harrington scampered in for his first touchdown of the season to cut the lead down to 23-7 with 11:06 left in the first half.
