Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. (March 20) -- In the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams, Assumption and Adelphi split a doubleheader on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at Marois Field. In a doubleheader played in unseasonably warm temperatures, the Hounds took game one by a 1-0 final before Adelphi held off Assumption for a 7-4 win in game two.
In game one, the Hounds were led by a 12-strikeout, three-hit performance from senior Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) as she kept the Panthers off the scoreboard for seven innings. The Panthers had just two runners reach second base in the game as Lowrey improves to 3-3 on the season. Assumption picked up its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) came home on a two-out fielding inning error by the left fielder. Palumbo finished the game 1-for-3, while Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk), Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) and Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) each had a pair of hits in the game.
Laurin Watts took the loss for the Panthers, going five innings and scattering six hits with three strikeouts as she falls to 2-2 overall.
In game two, the Panthers took advantage of a number of Assumption miscues to push three unearned runs across for the early 3-0 edge. The Hounds got the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Medeiros that scored sophomore Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central). Adelphi pushed the lead back to 4-1 and the game headed to the bottom of the fifth with the three-run margin.
In the fifth, the Hounds mounted a two-out rally with a pair of hits and walk to set the stage for Boris with the bases loaded. Boris launched a rocket to left field and over the fielder's head, hitting the fence just inches away from a go-ahead grand slam. Boris did clear the bases though to tie the game at 4-4 before being thrown out trying to reach third.
Adelphi pulled out the win in the top of the seventh though with four hits, including a two-RBI single to left from Amanda Krier, to pull out to a 7-4 edge. Assumption went down in the bottom of the seventh as the two teams split.
Medeiros, Boris and freshman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) each had two hits in game two, led by the three RBI from Boris. Senior Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) took the loss for the Hounds to fall to 2-2 overall, while Natalie Camarda improved to 1-0 in two innings of relief for Adelphi.
With the split, Assumption sits at 8-7 overall and 1-1 in Northeast-10 play, while Adelphi is now 10-5-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Assumption is back in action this weekend as the Hounds travel to Le Moyne and Saint Rose for a pair of Northeast-10 doubleheaders.
