Box Score 2 Albany, N.Y. (March 25) -- After a 7-4 win over Saint Rose in game one, the Assumption College softball team completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory in game two at Cathy Cummings Haker Field on Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action.
Assumption jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and added to that with a five-run fourth inning, led by a grand slam from left fielder Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner). Olivia Reeves got the Golden Knights on the board with a solo homer in the fourth, followed by a two-run shot in the sixth to make it a 7-3 game thru six innings. A Saint Rose solo homer by Anna Carey pulled the Golden Knights to within 7-4 with no outs in the seventh, but that was as close as they would get as the Hounds pulled out the win
Senior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet), who leads the Northeast-10 in strikeouts per game, improves to 4-4 with the victory, including 2-1 in league play.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, the Hounds got on the board in the top of the second as senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) launched her first home run of the season for a 1-0 Assumption lead. The Hounds added to that lead in the fourth on a solo shot to left by freshman Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Steph Luce reached on a single to right and was pinch ran for by Kayla Kuilema. Sarah Arbogast singled down the left field line for the Golden Knights with two outs to score Kuilema and get Saint Rose to within 2-1 before the Hounds came away with the win to complete the sweep. This marks the second-straight regular-season series sweep of Saint Rose for Assumption as the Hounds have now won five straight games over the Golden Knights.
Senior pitcher Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) picked up the victory for the Hounds to improve to 3-2 overall. Over seven innings, Durso scattered four hits with one run allowed and four strikeouts.
For Saint Rose, freshman Lauren Sputo took the loss as she falls to 2-8 on the season as she gave up four hits in 4.1 innings with two runs allowed. Sarah Arbogast came in to relieve Sputo, going 2.2 scoreless innings for the Golden Knights.
With the sweep, Assumption improves to 11-8 overall and 4-2 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Rose falls to 6-15 on the season and 2-6 in league play.
Assumption returns to action on Wednesday, March 28 as the Hounds host the University of New Haven for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
