Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. (March 28) -- After posting a 2-0 shutout win in game one, the Assumption College softball team fell to the University of New Haven by a 9-7 final in game two to split its Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Marois Field.
In game, senior Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) allowed just two hits in the seven innings with seven strikeouts to carry the Hounds to the win. She improved to 5-4 on the season with the win and now has 79 strikeouts on the season, leading the Northeast-10 in strikeouts per seven innings. The offense put up single runs in the third and fourth innings to provide all the support the Hounds would need as they had six hits in the game.
In the third, junior Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) reached on a fielder's choice and came home on a two-out RBI double down the right field line by junior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk). The second run came in the fourth on an RBI single to right center by freshman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy), scoring Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name). Impagliazzo finished the game 3-for-3 with one RBI, while Medeiros was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
Alana Wesche took the loss for New Haven, falling 5-6 on the season as she allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings. Brooke Fisher had both hits for the Chargers, going 2-for-3 in the game.
In game two, the Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Assumption answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning. The Hounds took advantage of four first-inning walks to tie the game as senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Medeiros. The Hounds took a 3-1 lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings again and seemed poised for the sweep. In the third, Impagliazzo posted an RBI as DiPilato scored, along with a run from Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) in the fourth for the two-run edge.
New Haven put up a big inning in the fifth, using eight hits to put up seven runs in the frame for an 8-3 edge. Highlighting the outburst was a two-RBI single to right from Erika Williams and a three-run homer to left by Sadie Williams. Assumption answered right back in the bottom of the sixth with four runs of their own to pull to within an 8-7 margin. After an RBI single from Palumbo scored Medeiros, Impagliazzo singled to center to score DiPilato and sophomore Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner).
The Chargers added a single run in the top of the seventh though to pad the lead back to 9-7 and held the Hounds scoreless in the bottom of the inning to earn the split.
Sophomore Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) went four innings in the loss, giving up four runs on nine hits to fall to 4-2 on the season. Kelsey Malloy was the winner for the Chargers, improving to 5-4 with the win as she gave up six earned runs while striking out two and walking seven.
Impagliazzo finished game two 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, along with two RBI from Palumbo and a 2-for-4 game from Jalbert. Impagliazzo finished the doubleheader with five hits and four runs batted in.
Assumption now sits at 12-10 overall with the split, along with a 5-3 mark in Northeast-10 play. New Haven is now 10-10 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Assumption returns to action this weekend, as the Hounds host Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon, followed by Southern New Hampshire on Sunday. Both doubleheaders will start at Noon.
