Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla. (March 5) -- Despite 15 hits in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at the NTC Spring Games, the Assumption softball team dropped a pair of games to Northern State and regional foe Georgian Court. The Hounds fell to NSU in game one, 7-2, along with a 5-3 setback to Georgian Court in game two. Assumption now sits at 2-5 for the season with six games remaining in Florida.
In game one, the Hounds fell behind 4-0 by the fourth inning as three of those runs were unearned. The Wolves made it a 7-0 margin in the top of the sixth before Assumption got on the board with a pair in the bottom of the seventh in the 7-2 final. Kami Smesmo went the distance for NSU, scattering seven hits with two earned runs and one strikeout. Senior Casey Halajian (Quincy, Mass./Archbishop Williams) made her first start of the season for the Hounds, allowing two earned runs in four innings pitched while giving up four hits to fall to 0-1. Senior Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) came into the game in relief, giving up three unearned runs and scattering five hits.
Sophomore Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) finished 2-for-3 with one run scored, along with a 2-for-4 showing with an RBI from freshman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy). Freshman Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) was 1-for-2, along with a 1-for-4 game from senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name). Freshman Meghan Conheeny (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) pinch hit in the bottom of the seventh and picked up her first career hit with a double before eventually scoring. Northern State improves to 5-3 on the season, snapping a three-game losing streak.
In game two vs. Georgian Court, Assumption jumped to a 2-0 first-inning lead thank to a two-RBI double from junior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk). The Lions got one back in the bottom of the first and tied the game at 2 just one inning later. Dara Schroder helped key a three-run inning in the fifth as the Lions took control at 5-2 after five. Schroder finished the game with a 4-for-4 outing with three runs scored, while Brooke Hull was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in. The Hounds added a run in the bottom of the seventh to get within a 5-3 margin before dropping their fourth straight game.
Sophomore Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) took the loss for the Hounds, falling to 1-1 on the season. Lattal went five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk. Junior Rachel Hedge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) pitched one inning of relief, giving up one hit with one walk in her first appearance of the season.
Hull picked up the win for the Lions, going the distance to improve to 2-1 on the season. She gave up three runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks as Georgian Court now sits at 4-2 overall.
Assumption is off on Tuesday before returning to action on Wednesday afternoon, taking on regional opponent Post University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Field 1 at the NTC Training Center.
