Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. (April 1) -- Freshman third baseman Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) was 7-for-7 with two doubles, a home run, six runs batted in and four runs scored as Assumption swept Southern New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon in a Northeast-10 doubleheader. The Hounds rallied in a wild game one to take a 7-6 victory in 10 innings, followed by a 9-1 win in six innings in the second game.
In game one, the Hounds got on the board in the bottom of the second as DiPilato homered just inside the left field foul pole to give Assumption the 1-0 edge. The game remained that way until the top of the fifth when Jessica Douillette singled to left to drive in Tesia Stanasek to even things at 1-1. Starting pitchers Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) for Assumption and freshman Ali Maloof for Southern New Hampshire kept the game tied thru nine innings before an eventual 10th inning.
The Penmen began the inning with Cristy Jenkins on second base and after two quick outs, the Hounds seemed poised to head to the bottom of the inning still tied. A bunt single from Amanda Barton just in front of the pitcher's circle scored Jenkins though and the lead was back with the Penmen at 2-1. On the next play, the Penmen took advantage of an Assumption throwing error and went on to add four more unearned runs to seize control at 6-1.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, junior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) laced a bases-loaded double to left center to score sophomore Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) and freshman Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) to pull within 6-3. After a strikeout to put the Penmen one out away from victory, DiPilato roped a two-RBI double to left center, followed by an RBI single to right by senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) to tie the game at 6-6. With the bases loaded again, sophomore Kolby Davenport (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) was hit by a pitch to score Palumbo from third with the game-winning run and the improbable victory.
Lowrey went the distance for the Hounds, scattering 12 hits while allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts and no walks to improve to-6-4 on the season. Maloof fell to 5-6 for the Penmen with the loss, allowing six earned runs with seven walks and 15 strikeouts.
DiPilato finished game one 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, two runs scored and two walks, along with a pair of hits from Medeiros.
In game two, the Penmen nearly struck first with two outs in the first as Kelsea Cheney launched a towering fly ball to center field. Robidoux tracked the ball down for the Hounds however, making the catch and flipping over the outfield fence for the final out of the inning. Assumption got the bats going in the bottom of the inning as well as DiPilato had a two-RBI double, along with an RBI single to center from Palumbo for the 3-0 advantage. Morgan Farmer had an RBI single to left in the top of the second to get the Penmen within 3-1, but that was as close as the visitors would get.
Assumption added a pair of runs in the third on four hits, along with four more in the sixth behind a two-RBI double from Palumbo to end the game at 9-1. With seven hits in the doubleheader, DiPilato raised her batting average 71 points in the doubleheader to .382 on the season.
DiPilato was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Palumbo was 2-or-4 with with four RBI. Sophomore Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) was 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI, along with two hits from junior Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner).
Assumption starter Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) got the start, going five innings and giving up one run to improve to 5-2 on the season. Senior Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) pitched two innings of one-hit relief to preserve the victory.
Dolores Mattice fell to 4-3 on the season for the Penmen, last just two innings and giving up five earned runs on five hits.
With the sweep, Assumption runs its overall record to 14-9 overall and 7-3 in Northeast-10 play to climb into third place in the league standings. With the pair of losses, Southern New Hampshire falls to 13-9 overall and is now 3-3 in league action.
Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, April 3rd as the Hounds travel to Pleasantville, N.Y., to take on Pace in a Northeast-10 doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
