Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. (April 14) – After pulling away for a 9-0 win in five innings in game one, the Assumption College softball team dropped a 4-2 final in the second game to visiting Stonehill on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at Marois Field.
The story in the first game was Assumption senior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet), who allowed just two hits (two bunt singles) while striking out eight to pick up her 11th win of the season.
The Hounds got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the second as freshman catcher Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) roped an RBI single to left center to score Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) for the 1-0 lead. Assumption extended the lead in the next inning as the Hounds sent 11 people to the plate for six hits and six runs, as well as a 7-0 lead. Highlighting the offensive outburst were two-RBI hits from Palumbo and freshman Katherine Mosca (Middletown, Conn./Middletown).
Assumption closed out the game's scoring in the bottom of the fourth as freshman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) laced a two-RBI double to left to score Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) and junior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) with unearned runs.
Eight different players picked up hits in game one for the Hounds, with six of them crossing the plate for at least one run. Katie Reardon took the loss on the pitching rubber for Stonehill, giving up nine runs, four earned, on 10 hits in just 3.1 innings.
In the second game, Impagliazzo put the hosts in front in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI single to left that scored DiPilato and sophomore Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner). The score stayed that way until the top of the sixth, when the first two Stonehill batters reached on singles off Assumption starter Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem). With two on, Lowrey came in to relieve Durso and allowed a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. The next batter, Linday McKillop, took Lowrey's pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam and the 4-2 lead.
Stonehill starter Samantha Krantz kept the high-scoring Assumption offense quiet in the game, scattering four hits with two runs and six strikeouts to improve to 9-5 on the season. Lowrey took the loss in the game for Assumption, falling to 11-6 overall.
Boris was the lone Greyhound with multiple hits in game two, going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
With the split, Assumption sits at 23-12 overall and 16-6 in Northeast-10 play, while the Skyhawks are now 18-12 overall and 11-11 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday, April 15 as the Hounds host Bentley University for a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Marois Field. Prior to the game, the Assumption softball program will honor seniors Caitlin Clary, Chelsea Durso, Jennifer Lowrey and Marissa Palumbo as part of the 2012 Senior Day.
