Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. (April 15) -- On a sunny Senior Day, the Assumption College softball team improved to 25-12 overall and 18-6 in Northeast-10 action with a sweep of visiting Bentley University by finals of 2-1 and 11-1 in six innings. Prior to the game, the team honored seniors Caitlin Clary (Belmont, N.H./Belmont), Chelsea Durso (Salem, N .H./Salem), Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) and Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) for their contributions to the program during their four-year careers.
In game one, the Hounds fell behind 1-0 in the top of the fourth as Bentley's Jackie Gauthier came home on an RBI single by Megan Blier for the 1-0 lead. Assumption answered back in the bottom of the inning as freshman Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) to drive in junior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) with the tying run.
The game remained that way until the bottom of the seventh when the Hounds put the first two runners of the inning on. After being sacrificed to second and third on a bunt from Caitlin Clary (Belmont, N.H./Belmont), freshman Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) delivered the game-winning hit up the middle to score Palumbo with the winning run.
Lowrey went the distance for the Hounds, scattering four hits with one run and eight strikeouts to improve to 12-6 on the season. Crowley finished the game 3-for-3, along with a 2-for-3 showing by Palumbo.
In game two, the Hounds got on the board quickly as Medeiros launched a two-out solo home run to right for the early 1-0 edge. DiPilato then led off the second inning with a solo homer just inside the left field foul pole, igniting a four-hit, five-run inning to put Assumption in front by a 6-0 margin.
Bentley got on the board in the top of the sixth with an unearned run to cut the lead to 6-1 before the Hounds finished off the game in the bottom of the inning. After a bases loaded walk of Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) pushed the lead to 7-1, Medeiros capped off the game with a grand slam to right field to end the game at 11-1 with one out in the sixth.
Medeiros finished with seven runs batted in for the game, tying the single-game school record which has stood for 18 years. She finished the game 3-for-4 as DiPilato and Crowley each added two hits in the win.
Durso went six innings for the Hounds, scattering four hits with one unearned run and five strikeouts as she improves to 6-2 on the season.
Assumption returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, hosting American International in the final regular-season home games for the Hounds this year. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Marois Field.
